Terms and Conditions apply Job Overview The Comprehensive Medicine Unit is a 32 bed Internal Medicine and telemetry unit, with 10 progressive care beds. North 5 is an AACN Beacon Silver Award recipient that provides patient‑centered care by a multidisciplinary team coupled with collaborative nurse/physician interactions. The leadership team takes a visionary and relationship‑based care approach to orienting the new graduate nurse, allowing them to experience a healthy work environment throughout their learning. Clinical Nurse Responsibilities Clinical Nurse I Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and family. Prevents illness and injury, maintains wellness, and provides comfort. Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and the integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Clinical Nurse II Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population. Prevents illness and injury, maintains wellness, and provides comfort. Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patients and families. Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and the integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Clinical Nurse III Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population. Prevents illness and injury, maintains wellness, and provides comfort. Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately. Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and the integrated multidisciplinary plan of care. Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state. AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent. Experience Requirements Clinical Nurse I: N/A. Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience. Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience. Preferred Experience Clinical Nurse I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting. Clinical Nurse II, III: Academic health‑care experience and experience with a similar patient population in an acute care setting. Education Requirements Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the state’s Board of Nursing. All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete it within five years unless grandfathered. Preferred Education Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program. Certification in a specialty area (for Clinical Nurse III). Independent Actions Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders. Practices within the boundaries of Virginia nursing regulations guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and national standards. Adheres to VCU Health policies and procedures. Supervisory Responsibilities Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN, LPN, care partners, unit secretaries) in carrying out assignments. Schedule and Shift Requirements Clinical nurses work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager. Hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet unit requirements. Physical Requirements Lifting 20–50 lbs. Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching, hearing, speaking, reading, logical thinking, and handling a fast pace environment.
