Job Summary Overall responsibility for operating the store at maximum sales and profit with the Company policies and procedures. Job Scope Store Manager is expected to work the number of hours necessary to successfully operate the store within the guidelines of policies and procedures and the additional requirement of his/her supervisors. A typical workweek is 48 to 52 hours in shopping center stores and 45 hours per week minimum in downtown locations. The number of hours worked should be reported on the time sheet, exactly as worked. Any vacation, sick leave, bereavement or other absences should have prior approval by the District Manager with supporting personnel status mailed to the Personnel Department. Store Manager should submit monthly and weekly schedule to the District Manager in writing, mailed to the District Manager each week so that it is received no later than Saturday prior to the beginning of the workweek. Any deviation from this schedule should have prior approval of the District Manager. Essential Functions Maintain an outgoing and enthusiastic rapport with store customers, providing good service and all possible assistance. Successfully complete the Management Training Program. Employ and properly train a qualified Assistant Manager with the advice and approval of the District Manager. Employ and train other store personnel with assistance of the Assistant Manager and the advice and approval of the District Manager. Seek advice from the District Manager on any personnel or operational problems or opportunities; if absent, consult the Regional Vice‑President; if both absent, contact the Senior Vice‑President of Store Operations. Control inventory shrinkage to within 2.5% of annual sales; disciplinary action for over 3.5% or two consecutive exceedances or 5% or more. Maintain a Shrink Check Test score of 80 or above; disciplinary action for scores below 80. Enforce Company Safety Policies. Maintain a good relationship with all area law enforcement agencies and continually solicit their assistance in security matters concerning the store. Complete, approve, and supervise the weekly schedule for all store personnel and operate the store within the assigned payroll budget with assistance of the Assistant Manager; notify the District Manager of any problems with the payroll budget. Assign duties and properly train all employees to perform their assignments according to company procedure. Inform all employees of company policies and procedures and enforce these policies at all times; as manager, ensure all employees adhere to company policies, including Store Work and Disciplinary Policies. Transmit and report payroll information accurately and in a timely manner per policy. Use authorized company procedures to maintain a well‑balanced and in‑stock merchandise inventory, including seasonal merchandise distribution. Maintain good standards of cleanliness throughout all areas of the store. Maintain clean and organized merchandise displays in all departments. Maintain well organized office and stock room areas. Ensure store operating hours as directed by Senior Management at Corporate Office. Verify all receipts of merchandise according to company policy and report any overages or shortages per procedure. Supervise the pricing of all merchandise according to company procedure. Keep the District Manager informed of fast and slow sellers and problems with direct vendor shipments. Hold total responsibility for the store cash fund and sales receipts; enforce all cash handling and cash security procedures. Ensure all reports, records, and inventories are completed accurately and according to company policy and procedure. Keep the District Manager informed of any problems or opportunities, actual or threatened, with store equipment or building structure. Notify the District Manager in advance of any absence from the store during normal scheduled work hours. Maintain confidentiality of all store sales, records, and other company information. Receive approval of the District Manager for all expenditures over $50.00. Work designated hours as required by the District Manager. Perform any other jobs or duties that may be required or assigned. Implement company programs (e.g., incentive plans, sales promotions, merchandise programs) with accuracy and timeliness to maximize associate and/or customer benefits. Project positive leadership: appearance, professionalism, communication skills, knowledge, judgment, objectivity, and morale of store employees. Handle count bulletins, markdowns, and on‑hand requests accurately and in a timely manner. Update on‑hand inventory regularly to ensure accuracy of inventory levels. Call in deposit information daily as required by corporate. Order merchandise weekly to maintain in-stock and maximize sales. Authority Hire store personnel in accordance with company policy with approval of the District Manager. Terminate store personnel after review and approval by the District Manager or Regional Operations Manager/Field Human Resources Manager. Conduct annual performance reviews and request pay adjustments to District Managers. Use good judgment to authorize refunds or exchanges when customer service warrants it. Enforce policies and procedures, handling layaways, credit cards, checks, and cash transactions with good judgment. Qualifications and Skills High School Diploma or GED. 3+ years of related experience in store management. Ability to effectively communicate in English. Strong planning, coaching, analytical and communication skills. Team‑oriented work style. Working Conditions Retail store environment requiring extended periods of standing. Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs from floor level to above shoulder height with or without reasonable accommodation. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, twisting, and repetitive lifting. Retail store stockroom environment subject to fluctuations in temperature. Occasional lifting and maneuvering of merchandise and displays. Exposure to dust and extreme temperatures while unloading trailers. Work hours may include evenings and weekends. Occasional use of ladders required. Education Equivalency Associate’s degree plus 2 years of related experience. Preferred Behaviors and Attributes Team Player – works well as a member of a group.
