Primary Function:

Assist the school bus driver in providing safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of students. The Bus Assistant supports student supervision, safety, and individual student needs, including assisting students with disabilities or special needs, while ensuring compliance with school district policies and state regulations.

Qualifications:

Licensing /Certification:

• Valid North Carolina Driver's License
• Ability to obtain required training and certifications as designated by the school district (e.g., CPR/First Aid, student management, specialized transportation training).

Education:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience :

• Experience working with children in a school, childcare, or related setting preferred
• Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill, and abilities

Essential Functions

• Assist the bus driver in maintaining a safe and orderly environment on the bus
• Supervise student behavior during transportation to and from school and school-related activities
• Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus, including students with mobility challenges or special needs
• Secure wheelchairs, specialized seating, seat belts, and safety equipment as required
• Provide appropriate assistance to students with disabilities, medical needs, or behavioral challenges in accordance with district guidelines and training
• Monitor student conduct and report incidents or concerns to the bus driver and transportation department
• Support emergency procedures and follow established safety protocols
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and transportation personnel
• Participate in required training and meetings
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Department

Exceptional Children (EC) Emphasis:

• Provide direct support to Exceptional Children (EC) students in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavior plans, and district procedures
• Assist EC students with physical, developmental, emotional, or behavioral needs during transportation
• Implement specialized transportation procedures, including proper use of adaptive equipment, mobility devices, and safety restraints
• Respond appropriately to medical or behavioral situations involving EC students, following established protocols and training
• Work collaboratively with bus drivers, EC staff, school administrators, and transportation personnel to ensure safe and consistent support for EC students
• Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity regarding student disabilities and educational needs
• Participate in specialized training related to EC transportation and student support

• Knowledge of student supervision and safety practices
• Knowledge of procedures related to transporting students with disabilities and special needs
• Ability to work effectively with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in stressful situations
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Basic understanding of school bus safety procedures
• Ability to work cooperatively with bus drivers and school personnel.

Reports To: Transportation Supervisor or designee

Physical Demands:

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must be able to use hands and fingers for manual dexterity. Other required abilities include close vision, the ability to adjust visual focus, and the ability to talk and hear.

Work Environment:

The employee regularly works in a school bus environment with varying noise levels and student activity. Work involves exposure to outdoor weather conditions during loading and unloading of students. Daily contact is made with students, school staff, parents, and the general public in person, by telephone, and in writing.
