HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM LEAD TEACHER
The Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) is a vibrant community center with a spirited history of strong programs, broad partnerships, and grassroots community organizing. Located on the grounds of Ezekiel Gillespie Middle School and Vel Phillips Memorial High School, the LCEC has a mission of building community, creating opportunities, and enriching education .  

The High School Program Lead Teacher is responsible for supporting high school students to develop and strengthen their academic, physical, and social skills by providing comprehensive programming and tutoring. The High School Program Lead Teacher is responsible for supporting youth in their daily out of school time activities (i.e. homework, performing arts, cooking club, financial literacy, identity groups, etc.) and organizing recreation activities. The High School Program Lead Teacher reports directly to the Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager.

The LCEC collaborates with various partners throughout Dane County and emphasizes the importance of positive youth development, racial and social justice, and a trauma-informed approach in enrichment activities. The High School Lead Teacher collaborates with the Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager to develop, facilitate, and evaluate high school programming for our diverse group of high school youth. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about working with young people and implementing purposeful and engaging programming.

HOURS: Part time, 25 hours/week during the school year with expanded hours during the summer. The school year schedule is typically Monday-Friday, 2:15pm-7:15pm, with some additional meeting and staff development hours required. Summer hours are typically Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Special events and field trips may require extended evening and weekend hours.

COMPENSATION: $20.00/hour, plus short term disability insurance, long term disability insurance, life insurance, paid vacation, holidays, personal days, and sick leave.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and lead engaging learning experiences that support high school students’ academic growth, physical well-being, and social emotional development incorporating youth voice and choice into our daily programming.
• Develop strong positive relationships with youth and their families.
• Collaborate with the Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager to identify, recruit, and support our Buffett Scholars and their families.
• Support high school student recruitment and retention efforts and engage families in consistent communication.
• Encourage youth to take part in collaborative group activities that help them develop new skills, build confidence, and strengthen their connections with peers and the community.
• Support students as they problem solve personal issues and help to provide them with positive and healthy solutions.
• Build relationships with staff at schools and other youth serving organizations to promote LCEC programs and build a network of resources for youth and program development.
• Participate in weekly team planning meetings, collect daily attendance information, and assist with reporting.
• Collaborate with program partners to support program facilitation. 
• Engage purposefully with interns, partners, and volunteers.
• Co-facilitate Youth Identity Groups.
• Complete any other duties needed to help fulfill the mission of the LCEC and adhere to the  Lussier Framework.

Participate fully in shared work of the LCEC, including neighborhood events, staff retreats/meetings, and other projects as they arise.  

The High School Program Lead Teacher will perform all other duties and/or tasks at the discretion of the Buffett Scholars and Teen Programs Manager as necessary for the successful operation of the LCEC.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Preferred candidates will have satisfactorily completed one of the following:
  • An after-school and youth development credential training program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, or
  • At least 10 hours of training approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, or
  • Two noncredit courses in school-age care approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
• Must be at least 25 years of age and have completed high school or its equivalent as determined by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
• Valid Driver’s License
• Current CPR and First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of hire.  

SOUGHT SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Minimum of one year experience working with youth in a similar capacity.
• Knowledge of behavior guidance and conflict resolution.
• Mature attitude, creativity, resourcefulness, and a positive role model for youth.
• Understanding of and appreciation for socio-economically, ethnically and culturally diverse communities.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.
• Language abilities in Spanish, Hmong, and/or Arabic.
