Overview
New York Public Library is hiring Tutors for the NYPL After School program, which provides free, drop-in homework help and enrichment activities for school-age children at NYPL locations in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Tutors work alongside the Lead Tutor at each location.
The 2024-2025 program year for NYPL After School will run from September 30, 2024 to June 12, 2025 . Tutors will not work during scheduled program breaks, including holiday closures and days when NYC DOE schools are not in session. Prior to the program’s launch, Tutors will attend training workshops during the weeks of September 16 and September 23, 2024.
During the program cycle, Tutors will work 8 hours per week, either Mondays & Wednesdays or Tuesdays & Thursdays, scheduled for four hours a day between 2:00-7:00 PM, with additional hours required for staff meetings, professional development, and program preparation.
Working alongside the Lead Tutor at each location, Tutors work in the public library to engage children ages 6-12 in group format academic support and enrichment activities during the busy after school hours. The program does not require enrollment and children are welcome to participate on a drop-in basis each day.
In the application, you will select up to 4 locations where you are available to work. You must be able to get to the locations you select by 2 PM on either Monday & Wednesday or Tuesday & Thursday. If you are hired, you will be assigned to a primary location, with occasional assignment to nearby locations as staffing needs arise.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of an Associate Manager, NYPL After School Tutors will:- Work alongside a Lead Tutor to implement NYPL After School’s daily homework help service at designated program locations on weekdays between the hours of 2:00-7:00 PM
- Welcome and engage children ages 6-12 in homework help and enrichment activities on a walk-in basis during after school hours in the library
- Work with students both individually and in groups to deliver scalable academic support and promote learning across subject areas including math, reading, social studies, and science across elementary grade levels
- Share program information and expectations with parents/caregivers and refer patrons to branch staff for additional resources and assistance
- Assist the Lead Tutor in tracking attendance and managing program supplies
- Communicate proactively with branch and central staff to provide feedback and highlight challenges and successes
- Plan and implement engaging enrichment activities for children
- Provide supportive guidance and model best practices for youth employees from the Teen Reading Ambassadors program, who provide additional staff support for NYPL After School
- Work alongside the Children’s Librarian and other branch staff to provide assistance for programs and events in the library
- Attend periodic meetings and trainings to facilitate information exchange among program staff and promote professional development
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree OR
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program, with at least two or more years completed at an approved accredited educational institution
Required Experience
- Prior experience working in a formal or informal education setting with children and/or teens
- Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas
Required Skills
- Ability to engage and communicate effectively with children ages 6-12, as well as parents and caregivers, co-workers, and supervisors
- Ability to multitask and work flexibly in a busy public library environment
- Strong understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History, and Second Language concepts
- Ability to independently navigate basic computer and technology applications, including regular use of Google Applications and Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Skills
- Applying second language skills to program or professional setting (languages including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Spanish, Urdu)
