School Bus AideTitle: School Bus Aide Union Status: DTUDepartment: Transportation Work Year: Based on Official School CalendarLocation: Palatine CCSD 15 Reports To: Director of Transportation or DesigneeISBE N/A Evaluation: Annually by May 15FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Supervisory None.Salary: $18.43/Hour Benefits Benefits ContractGeneral Responsibilities: In conjunction with the School Bus Driver, this position is responsible for greeting students, helping students to find assigned seats, making sure safety devices are secured, providing extra care to students with special needs, monitoring student behavior, and reinforcing rules and regulations.Work Year - for those who choose an out of district route, aides are required to work during D15 student attendance days plus additional days if/when out of district schools are in attendance.Essential Functions:Job assignments may include regular or special education routing. Some assignments may require "CPR" training, which will be provided.Conducts a pre-trip inspection of all safety equipment.Keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions.Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority and compiles written reports as requested in accordance with the D15 Transportation Employee Handbook and the D15 Student Handbook.Participates in an annual bus evacuation drill as required by the State of Illinois and implements evacuations as required in an emergency to include safely exiting from the rear of the school bus.In an event where the Bus Driver becomes incapacitated, reports immediately, via two-way radio to dispatch/transportation office, requesting police or ambulance service as needed.Supervises students at any time including regular routes, sporting events, field trips, etc.Assists Bus Driver in boarding, seating and/or securement of students. Secures and installs wheelchairs, car seats, and other safety devices on the bus as needed.Remains on a school bus at all times while children are on board, unless there is another adult supervisor present on the bus. Exception to this is when operating a wheelchair lift; any other times with permission from dispatch/transportation office by radio.Exercises responsible leadership and appropriate behavior when on duty.Provides needed support when dealing with medically fragile students.Provides needed support when dealing with discipline issues.Maintains student discipline on the bus and enforces rules governing student conduct, including through oral communication when the bus is in motion.Abides by all District policies and rules as outlined in the District Transportation Employee Handbook and School Board Policies.Job Description:Communicates effectively and positively with parents, students, staff and co-workers.Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.Keeps assigned time schedules, which may require working during pre-day light and dusk periods, and makes every effort to be on time while ensuring safety.Education, Credentialing and/or Experience:High School diploma or GED required.Must be at least 21 years of age.Must complete required district training classes.Physical Demands and Work Environment:Duties are performed on and around a school bus.Frequent exposure to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from riding on a bus; and traffic.Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts.Regular exposure to all outside weather conditions.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hand and arms; push and pull, climb, bend, stoop, and kneel; and talk and hear.The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.Regularly requires the lifting/pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds.Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.Reviewed/Revised March 2023 - Salary and Benefits updated 7/2026 The statements in this job description are intended to describe the general nature and level of the work to be performed by (an) individual(s) assigned to this position.
