The Manager of Nursing functions as a member of the Nursing Management Team.  S/he supervises and coordinates the activities of the surgical unit.  The Manager of Nursing inspects the area; assures that patient care needs are met; and nursing care is delivered in relation to the standards of care for the unit 24-hours a day.

Required Education:

• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
• Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Illinois.

Desirable Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field.

  Required Experience:  

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager.

Desirable Experience:

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Nurse Manager in a medical/surgical unit.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Administrative

• Responsible for the interviewing, hiring, and training employees; appraising performance; disciplinary actions; addressing complaints; and resolving issues.
• Responsible for continuing staff development.
• Assist in the development and implementation of polices and procedures for Surgical Unit not covered by Hospital policies.
• Promote and assist in the development, implementation, and revision of nursing care plans.
• Assure measurable goals are identified which conform to the standard of care for the Surgical unit.
• Assist in the preparation of department nursing budget.
• Oversee and review expenditures including labor, benefits, supplies, equipment, etc.
• Research, evaluate, and propose new equipment and technology for effective patient care.
• Assure that patient care conforms to the standard of care identified for the service and is delivered in an organized effective manner through the nursing process.

Quality Improvement

• Ensure proper procedures are followed with regards to record keeping.
• Maintain highest level of departmental cleanliness and safety.
• Maintain safety of property and patient under treatment.  Perform related management or professional duties as required by the Administration, physician, or dictated by patient’s needs.
• Direct monthly departmental meetings.
• Participate in appropriate professional and/or specialty organizations.
• Plan and organize orientation and in-service training for staff and participate in guidance and education programs.
• Monitor learning programs to determine effectiveness.
• Engage in studies and investigations related to improving nursing care.

Clinical

• Review medical records to confirm significant nursing documentation meets legal parameters and the requirements of regulatory agencies.
• Problem solves or refers problems appropriately according to the organizational structure of the Nursing Department and/or the Hospital.
• Assure equipment, linen, supplies, and Hospital resources are utilized correctly in a cost effective manner.
• Interact with patients, families, physicians, ancillary staff, support services staff, and the community.
• Participate in the planning and coordinating of nursing activities with other disciplines.
• Assure staffing levels meet patient care requirements through compiling employee work schedules; approving vacations and time off; and monitoring attendance and punctuality.
• Supervise the implementation of changes to improve patient care.
• Observe and evaluate treatment effects.
• Attempt to analyze patient’s needs (emotional and physical) and deal with it accordingly.
• Evaluate patient’s progress.
• Record treatment effects on patient.
• Record progress or lack of progress.
