Duties

Help

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for Paralegal work. Typical work assignments will include:

  • Performing extensive and thorough legal research into the legislative history, precedent cases, decisions, and opinions that may be applicable to particular legal matters.
  • Drafting initial legal and administrative briefs, U.S. Attorney Office motions, oppositions to defense motions and correspondence for Assistant U.S. Attorneys review.
  • Organizing data and developing trial exhibits such as statistical charts, graphs, and timelines to be presented in court as corroborative evidence.
  • Preparing and organizing trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports and correspondence relating to cases for review by Assistant U.S. Attorneys review.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
  • This is a Term position not-to-exceed September 30, 2029. This position may be extended up to four years.
  • Term appointments are time limited and non-permanent and do not give competitive/permanent status.

Qualifications

GS-9: To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below : Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience performing research, evaluation, and analysis of a variety of routine legal topics and points of law; preparing briefs and the presentation of oral arguments; preparing and organizing documentation and evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the GS-07 grade/level in the federal service.

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Criminal Justice, Law, Business Administration, etc.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

GS-11: To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet at least ONE of the following conditions, as defined below : Specialized Experience, Education, OR a combination of Education and Experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience determining which statues, regulations, cases, procedures and policies to be researched and assembled related to civil and criminal appeals; reviewing, proofreads, and edits complex legal documents; coordinating productions of administrative records and responses to requests for discovery; providing automated litigation assistance in trial preparation and courtroom presentations; participates in pre-trial witness conferences, noting any deficiencies in case materials, (e.g., missing documents, conflicting statements) requiring investigation prior to trial; and interacting with opposing counsel regarding the correctness of factual information, technical issues or procedural requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the GS-09 grade/level in the federal service.

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Criminal Justice, Law, Business Administration, etc.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. If your agency has notified you in writing that you are a displaced employee eligible for ICTAP consideration, you may receive selection priority if: 1) this vacancy is within your ICTAP eligibility; 2) you apply under the instructions in the announcement; and 3) you are found well-qualified for this vacancy. To be well-qualified, you must satisfy all qualification requirements for the vacant position and receive a score of 85 or better on established ranking criteria. You must provide proof of eligibility to receive selection priority. Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)- The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
