Special Education Instructional Assistant

Job Summary

OVERVIEW OF POSITION

• To assist school personnel in providing appropriate educational program(s).
• To aid an educational environment in which students succeed academically, socially, and physically in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives.
• To support implementing the designated educational framework, appropriate materials and resources, and best instructional practices.
• To serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community, and the school system.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills.
2. For Title I or Title I Targeted Assistance Program Schools Only:
   • Must hold an Associate's Degree (or)
   • Have completed a minimum of 48 semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. (or)
   • Have successfully completed the Alabama State Board of Education approved WORKKEYS test.
3. Adequate strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, and bending if applicable.
4. Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. To understand and assist in upholding school rules, policies, and procedures.
2. To participate in the efficient and effective operation of the school as directed by the principal.
3. To respect the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and staff.
4. To assist in fostering positive student attitudes toward citizenship, self-discipline, morality, and patriotism.
5. Ability to observe and execute duties constant with that of the special education teacher.
6. Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to instructional procedures and other classroom activities.
7. Possession of effective skills in both oral and written communication to assist and compliment the special education teacher in program implementation.
8. Physical ability needed to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
9. Be capable of moving and lifting moderately heavy weights.
10. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed.
11. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
12. Plan regularly with assigned teacher.
13. Performs academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified special education teacher(s).
14. Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach, when necessary, material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
15. Works with individual students who need special attention.
16. Assists in the guidance of, but not limited to, independent study, enrichment work, remedial help, interventions and/or follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).
17. Assists the teacher(s) by checking student notebooks and daily written and oral assignments.
18. Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties.
19. Assists with preparing of instructional aids, bulletin boards and other learning displays.
20. Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, break, personal hygiene/clothing needs, etc. as directed.
21. Keep charts and records of students' performances and accomplishments as assigned.
22. Assist the teacher in preparing materials necessary for a positive learning environment.
23. Perform clerical tasks including inventory, filing, and typing, operate audiovisual equipment, and care for equipment and materials.
24. Assist teacher with basic physical needs of students.
25. Take all the necessary precautions to provide for the safety and welfare of students.
26. Attend and participate in individual, school, and system professional development activities.
27. Maintain a cooperative working relationship with school staff, parents, and community.
28. Promote good public relations for school system with the general public.
29. Maintain the confidentiality of all school-related business.
30. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
31. Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors students in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
32. Perform other reasonable duties during school necessary to the safe and effective operation of the school when assigned by the principal.
33. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

:

182-day contract. Salary according to appropriate current salary schedule. Classified position.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated, but not limited to, in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pickens County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
