Job Summary
OVERVIEW OF POSITION
- To assist school personnel in providing appropriate educational program(s).
- To aid an educational environment in which students succeed academically, socially, and physically in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives.
- To support implementing the designated educational framework, appropriate materials and resources, and best instructional practices.
- To serve as a student advocate, role model, and professional resource for parents, the community, and the school system.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills.
- For Title I or Title I Targeted Assistance Program Schools Only:
- Must hold an Associate's Degree (or)
- Have completed a minimum of 48 semester hours of study at a regionally accredited institution of higher education. (or)
- Have successfully completed the Alabama State Board of Education approved WORKKEYS test.
- Adequate strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, and bending if applicable.
- Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- To understand and assist in upholding school rules, policies, and procedures.
- To participate in the efficient and effective operation of the school as directed by the principal.
- To respect the confidentiality of information pertaining to students and staff.
- To assist in fostering positive student attitudes toward citizenship, self-discipline, morality, and patriotism.
- Ability to observe and execute duties constant with that of the special education teacher.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret both oral and written directives relevant to instructional procedures and other classroom activities.
- Possession of effective skills in both oral and written communication to assist and compliment the special education teacher in program implementation.
- Physical ability needed to lift and restrain students of varying age levels and sizes.
- Be capable of moving and lifting moderately heavy weights.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed.
- Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
- Plan regularly with assigned teacher.
- Performs academic, therapeutic, and recreational tasks under the supervision of a certified special education teacher(s).
- Works with small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach, when necessary, material initially introduced by the teacher(s).
- Works with individual students who need special attention.
- Assists in the guidance of, but not limited to, independent study, enrichment work, remedial help, interventions and/or follow-up work as specified by the teacher(s).
- Assists the teacher(s) by checking student notebooks and daily written and oral assignments.
- Assists with routine classroom clerical and housekeeping duties.
- Assists with preparing of instructional aids, bulletin boards and other learning displays.
- Assists with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack, break, personal hygiene/clothing needs, etc. as directed.
- Keep charts and records of students' performances and accomplishments as assigned.
- Assist the teacher in preparing materials necessary for a positive learning environment.
- Perform clerical tasks including inventory, filing, and typing, operate audiovisual equipment, and care for equipment and materials.
- Assist teacher with basic physical needs of students.
- Take all the necessary precautions to provide for the safety and welfare of students.
- Attend and participate in individual, school, and system professional development activities.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with school staff, parents, and community.
- Promote good public relations for school system with the general public.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all school-related business.
- Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
- Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors students in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
- Perform other reasonable duties during school necessary to the safe and effective operation of the school when assigned by the principal.
- Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
:
182-day contract. Salary according to appropriate current salary schedule. Classified position.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated, but not limited to, in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pickens County Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
