Ethicist

ONSITE AT DETROITGENERAL SUMMARY:Under direction of the Chief Medical Officer of Henry Ford Hospital, the Ethicist isresponsible for leading and maintaining an effective hospital ethics program, workingwith the Ethics Committee, and managing the Ethics Consultation Service. Serves asa role model for interdisciplinary, collaborative care improvement and delivery.PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Will function in a clinical role performing and overseeing ethics consultations forHenry Ford Hospital.2. Serves as a member of the Ethics Committee and provides guidance related to themembership, standards, and practices of an effective and high-quality EthicsCommittee; provides training for continuing and new Ethics Committee members.3. Directs the Ethics Consultation Service and works with a small group of EthicsCommittee members to do timely and high-quality ethics consults as needed orrequested.4. Develops and provides regular ethics education programs for clinicians, staff, andothers.5. Responsible for the review and update of existing ethics-related policies andprovides leadership in the development of new policies as needed. Ensurescompliance with all regulatory requirements.6. Serves on relevant committees such as quality, safety, and patient experience.7. Engages in and supports ethics research and scholarship. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with area of specialization in bioethics, or Doctor ofJurisprudence (JD), or a Doctor of Medicine with additional advanced graduate levelprogram, fellowship in Bioethics/Clinical Ethics or equivalent, and board certified inHealthcare Ethics Consultation (HEC-C).• Advanced knowledge and extensive experience in:o Clinical ethics consultation (preferably over a period of at least 5 years).o Working with hospital Ethics Committees.o Providing clinical ethics education to clinicians and others, in both formal andinformal settings. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:Healthcare Ethics Consultation Certification (HEC-C) from American Society ofBioethics and Humanities (ASBH).
