Physician - Hospitalist The Veterans Health Administration is seeking Physician Hospitalists for Acute Inpatient Medicine at the Eastern Oklahoma VA Health Care System in Muskogee, OK. The Hospitalist provides attending physician coverage for hospitalized Veterans, evaluates and admits patients to the medical service and intensive care units, manages acute and chronic medical conditions, coordinates care transitions, participates in quality improvement, and supports safe discharge planning and interdisciplinary inpatient care. Provide primary attending physician coverage for hospitalized Veterans during varying day shifts of 10 to 12 hours. Manage acute and chronic medical conditions, medication optimization, and complex medical-surgical co-management patients. Coordinate care transitions with consultants, specialists, primary care physicians, and post-acute care facilities. Implement evidence-based protocols and clinical pathways to optimize patient outcomes and length of stay. Maintain comprehensive, timely documentation in VistA, CPRS, and other required clinical documentation systems. Respond to rapid response calls and code blue resuscitations as clinically indicated. Serve as Medical Officer of the Day to oversee general medicine service operations, triage transfer requests, manage patient flow, and ensure balanced workload distribution. Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case conferences, care coordination meetings, huddles, and team meetings. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, clinical pathway development, and performance improvement projects. Monitor and address patient safety events and provide feedback on process improvements. Serve on clinical committees and quality improvement initiatives as assigned. Contribute to credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes. Maintain current ACLS and BLS certifications. Participate in continuing medical education, professional development, faculty development, and academic responsibilities as appropriate. Work collaboratively with nursing, pharmacy, social work, case management, specialty services, and Veterans integrated care teams. Communicate effectively with primary care physicians regarding ongoing patient management and follow-up. Basic Qualifications: Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy. Must be proficient in written and spoken English. Must have a Doctor of Medicine degree or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. Medical degree must be from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed. Must have a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Must have completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification, unless otherwise covered by VA policy. Must be subject to background/security investigation. Must pass a pre-employment physical examination. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and remain subject to testing requirements for this testing designated position. Preferred Experience: Internal Medicine physician with experience as a board-certified Hospitalist preferred. Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine preferred. Ability and willingness to participate in trainee learning, supervision, and training of residents, medical students, and PA/NP students preferred. Proficiency, desire, and willingness to perform bedside procedures preferred, including paracentesis, thoracentesis, bone marrow biopsy and aspiration, lumbar puncture, central line placement, arterial line placement, and intubation. Documented procedures performed within the last 2 years preferred for bedside procedures. Proficiency and willingness to perform ventilator management preferred. Education: Doctor of Medicine or equivalent allopathic or osteopathic medical degree is required. Schools of medicine must have been accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education for the year the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine must have been approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation for the year the degree was granted. Foreign medical graduates must have confirmation that the medical school meets or met Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates eligibility requirements for the year of graduation, unless otherwise covered by VA policy.
