Medical Director - Part time

Position Summary

The Medical Director, under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, contributes to our mission by providing medical supervision over the operations of the company including phlebotomy, donor care, donor screening, apheresis platelet collection, platelet manufacturing, platelet distribution and all laboratory activities. Key responsibilities include serving as the CLIA Laboratory Director, ensuring laboratory compliance with all regulatory requirements, and providing medical guidance and consultation for donors and staff as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Champion the company’s mission by providing comprehensive medical oversight across all organizational activities.
• Act as the CLIA Laboratory Director for a moderate complexity testing laboratory, ensuring full compliance with CMS regulations and functions.
• Direct the development and maintenance of SOPs for donor selection, collection, processing, and distribution in accordance with federal and state regulations.
• Establish medical policies governing donor eligibility, notification, counseling, and deferral processes.
• Provide direct medical supervision and leadership to the Apheresis Nurse Manager.
• Mentor and monitor clinical staff, providing expert guidance on medical and technical issues.
• Lead staff education on blood banking and transfusion medicine topics that help inform on donor safety and product safety, quality, identity, purity and potency.
• Oversee laboratory proficiency programs and ensure rigorous staff competency assessments.
• Cultivate professional relationships with medical personnel at current and prospective partner hospitals.
• Advise donors on medical inquiries, post-donation care, and donor test results.
• Provide strategic medical and regulatory counsel to the company’s executive leadership team regarding platelet manufacturing and distribution.
• Execute additional responsibilities as necessary to support operations.

Qualifications

• Current California Medical License to practice medicine and serve as the CLIA Laboratory Director
• Board certified or board eligible in Clinical Pathology with fellowship training in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine (OR) Other relevant medical specialty with extensive experience in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine
• Strong leadership and managerial skills
• Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Proven ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team
• Proficient computer skills and typing abilities
