Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Technician Job Description This role provides advanced clinical laboratory testing in an oncology-focused environment, supporting accurate diagnosis and treatment decisions for patients facing complex health challenges. You will perform a broad range of Chemistry, Hematology and Immunology testing, manage specimen processing and send-out orders, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments, and uphold rigorous quality control and documentation standards. This position offers meaningful work, unique oncology lab experience, and a consistent weekday schedule with no weekend or night shifts. Responsibilities * Follow established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, result reporting, and record maintenance to ensure accurate and reliable patient results. * Process incoming orders for laboratory testing, including both in-house tests and reference laboratory specimens, ensuring proper accessioning and documentation. * Send specimens to reference laboratories for any testing that is not performed in-house, following all packaging, labeling, and documentation requirements. * Perform specimen analysis for Chemistry, Hematology and Immunology, working as a generalist across multiple test systems in compliance with CLIA regulations. * Maintain and operate all laboratory equipment, including performing daily, weekly and monthly instrument maintenance as indicated by manufacturer guidelines and laboratory policy. * Adhere strictly to laboratory quality control policies and document all QC activities, including instrument and procedural calibrations, control runs, and instrument maintenance. * Record proper lot numbers for all controls, calibrators and reagents used in testing to ensure full traceability and compliance with quality standards. * Participate in proficiency testing at least annually by performing sample analysis and reporting results according to program requirements. * Prepare peripheral blood smears and perform complete white blood cell differentials, documenting findings accurately in worksheets and the laboratory information system. * Perform microscopic examination of urinary sediment, record results on appropriate worksheets and in the computer system, and complete necessary file maintenance. * Process specimens for send-out testing, including preparing, labeling and documenting samples for external reference laboratories. * Follow laboratory policies whenever test systems fall outside established acceptable performance levels, including halting testing when necessary and initiating troubleshooting. * Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or the reporting of test results, take corrective actions when appropriate, or promptly notify a supervisor. * Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance standards in accordance with the quality assurance program. * Maintain proper documentation including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records and checklists to support regulatory and accreditation requirements. * Verify all critical results, ensure timely communication to appropriate clinical staff, and document follow-up actions accurately. * Monitor and maintain adequate inventory of supplies, verify that all supplies and reagents are viable before use in patient testing, and restock the laboratory area as needed. * Prepare reagents, stains and other chemical solutions as needed, following standardized protocols and safety procedures. * Process in-house and incoming results for charting, ensuring data integrity and alignment with patient records. * Chart patient results in a timely and accurate manner, supporting prompt clinical decision-making. * Manage and coordinate work for up to approximately 26 team members with varying backgrounds and personalities, fostering a collaborative and respectful laboratory environment. * Work primarily across two main laboratory locations on a rotating basis and travel to additional designated sites when needed to provide coverage and maintain service continuity. Essential Skills * Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). * Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, typically resulting in an associate degree. * Ability to work as a generalist across Chemistry, Hematology and Immunology test areas in compliance with CLIA regulations. * Proficiency in specimen handling, processing, analysis, result reporting and record maintenance in a clinical laboratory setting. * Experience maintaining, operating and performing routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and analyzers. * Strong understanding of laboratory quality control policies, including QC documentation, calibrations, proficiency testing and corrective action procedures. * Skill in preparing peripheral blood smears and performing complete WBC differentials. * Competence in microscopic examination of urinary sediment and accurate result documentation. * Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems affecting test performance or result reporting, and to escalate issues appropriately. * Organizational skills to maintain logs, records, checklists and inventory in alignment with quality assurance requirements. * Communication skills to verify and document critical results and follow-up actions clearly and promptly. * Capacity to coordinate and support a team of laboratory professionals with diverse backgrounds. * Willingness and ability to travel between multiple laboratory locations as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications * ASCP or AMT certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician. * Approximately 2-5 years of clinical laboratory experience preferred, particularly in a generalist role. * Experience working in an oncology laboratory or other high-complexity clinical environment is highly beneficial. * Familiarity with CLIA regulations and compliance requirements for clinical laboratories. * Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all aspects of testing and documentation. * Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team. * Adaptability to rotate between multiple sites and manage varying workloads and priorities. * Interest in providing compassionate, high-quality support to patients undergoing cancer treatment and their care teams. Work Environment This position is based in an oncology-focused clinical laboratory environment, providing meaningful work that directly supports patients during a challenging time in their lives. You will primarily work Monday through Friday, with start times between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and end times between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., rotating within that window as needed. There are no weekend or night shifts. The role involves working across multiple laboratory sites, with an ideal schedule of three days at one main center and two days at another, plus occasional travel to additional locations to provide coverage. You will use standard clinical laboratory analyzers and equipment for Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology and microscopy, and follow established safety protocols and quality standards. The environment is professional, team-oriented and patient-centered, with opportunities to gain specialized oncology lab experience that is not typically available in general laboratory settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
