This is a one year term-limited position with possibility of extension contingent upon funding availability. Chief engineer for propulsion (SPAR)Overseeing the technical efforts of a national team of universities and small businesses developing advanced propulsion concepts for the SPAR instituteCoordinating and executing on several systems-level integrated tests for the propulsion team. Key subsystems to be integrated include flow system, power processing, and engine headOverseeing efforts at University of Michigan to implement upgraded hydrazine-compatible test facilities for propulsion testingSupporting the maintenance and use of the alternative gas test facility capable of testing high-power (> 100 kW) thruster conceptsTechnical lead (DARPA)Serving as a liaison and test lead for projects with commercial partners (5 universities and 5 small businesses)Supporting ongoing test activities on Hall thrusters, rotating magnetic field thrusters, advanced hollow cathodes, and magnetic nozzlesLeading development and maintenance of diagnosticsAssisting in maintaining a culture of lab safetyAssisting in the mentorship of doctoral students in the groupAssisting in the writing and preparation of proposals for sponsored grant research Required Qualifications*PhD in aerospace or related engineering disciplineExperience with cryogenic pumping vacuum systemsExperience with Hall thruster testing at power levels above 5 kWExperience with the implementation and analysis of standard electric thruster diagnostic suitesExperience with hollow cathode development and power processing developmentExperience in leadership of technical teamsEligibility for USG Secret clearance Modes of WorkPositions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
