Description & Requirements

The Department of Pathology invites applications for a dynamic and forward thinking clinical pathologist to serve as Vice Chair for Clinical Pathology and CLIA Medical Director for the Wake Forest Baptist Health System (WFBHS). This senior leader will oversee clinical laboratory strategy and regulatory excellence while advancing the department's operational, academic, and research missions.


As a core member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Vice Chair will collaborate closely with Advocate Clinical Laboratories (ACL) and act as the department's primary liaison to the National Center for Clinical Trials (NCCT). The successful candidate will guide a complex, multisite clinical pathology enterprise through continued institutional growth, emphasizing innovation, fiscal stewardship, and long term sustainability.


Key responsibilities include shaping system wide clinical pathology programs; modernizing laboratory operations; promoting diagnostic innovation; and supporting faculty development, mentorship, and academic success. Working across WFUSM and Advocate Health, the Vice Chair will strengthen laboratory capabilities that support clinical trials, translational research, biomarker development, and precision diagnostics.

Key Responsibilities
• Clinical & Regulatory Leadership: Provide medical direction for WFBHS CLIA regulated laboratories; ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, FDA; oversee quality systems and validation of emerging technologies.
• Departmental Leadership: Guide strategic planning, workforce development, and innovation across all Clinical Pathology subspecialties; promote operational alignment with ACL.
• Institutional Leadership: Contribute to enterprise level initiatives, committees, and systemwide laboratory strategy.
• NCCT Partnership: Ensure laboratory readiness for clinical trials and expand research infrastructure.
• Faculty Development: Foster mentorship, recruitment, retention, education, and scholarly activity.


Training and/or Experience Required

Qualifications
• MD/DO (or MD/PhD) with CP or AP/CP board certification
• Subspecialty expertise in a major Clinical Pathology discipline
• Eligibility for NC medical licensure
• 5-7+ years of leadership experience in an academic clinical pathology environment
• Demonstrated excellence in regulatory oversight, quality leadership, and multidisciplinary team management
• Experience with clinical trials infrastructure preferred
