Training Individuals selected for hire and not OPOTA certified will be required to attend a 26-week training class located at the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus. Responsibilities Assist state highway patrol officers in patrolling grounds and buildings on foot and in car, protecting lives of consumers, clients visitors and employees; checking property for open doors, gates, windows, fires or other hazards; preventing crimes and enforcing laws, rules and regulations; checking identity of persons on grounds and nature of business. Monitor traffic conditions and parking facilities to ensure efficient flow of traffic. Check parking permits and issue traffic tickets as necessary. Assist other police officers in apprehending, arresting, and processing criminal violators. File affidavits. Serve warrants and subpoenas. Qualifications Option 1: Formal education in arithmetic including fractions, decimals and percentages and reading and writing English vocabulary; valid driver's license. Probationary period is one year. Option 2: Possession of a certificate having successfully completed an approved basic peace officer training program or completion of 20 years of active duty as a peace officer per Section 109.78 (D) of Ohio revised code for developmental disabilities and mental health facility employees. Probationary period is one year. Applicant must be able to successfully perform Ohio Peace Officer Basic Training Program (OPOTC) fitness testing entry standards for new recruits. Physical and Appearance Requirements All applicants must meet required appearance standards for uniformed employees and pass a physical fitness assessment. Background Check BCI/FBI fingerprint check, background check and polygraph examination may be required on all selected applicants. A comparative analysis and/or drug test may be a requirement of the hiring process. This position is subject to federal ATF regulations regarding firearms and marijuana. A positive drug test result of marijuana, even if legal under Ohio law, may result in denial of employment. Unusual Working Conditions May work weekends and nights; work outside exposed to inclement weather; call in emergency situations; exposed to unpredictable client behavior.
