Substitute Van Driver

Van DriverPerforms semiskilled work operating a van, transporting students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Planner.High school diploma or GED preferred. Applicant requirement of at least 1 year of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Must be 18 years of age.Pay Grade NC04 $16.80 (flat rate)Reports to School Bus Supervisor/Transportation PlannerEssential FunctionsPerforms pre- and post-trip vehicle inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.Transports a small number of students to and from school, along with other activities and events.Cleans vehicle inside and out including washing, sweeping, emptying trash, etc.Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations.Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on vehicle; completes disciplinary forms as needed.Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.Records mileage; maintains records and reports.Performs related work as required.Follows a predetermined route that may extend beyond county lines.Must be readily available to assist passenger in entering (fasten securely) and exiting the vehicle as well as securely entering the building at his/her destination.Reports to dispatcher/planner dangerous stops, turns or traffic situations or passenger issues.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMust be able to physically operate a 7-passenger mini-van in a safe and timely manner.Must be able to safely operate vehicle in all kinds of weather and on all types of highways, roads, and streets.Must have an excellent driving record and practice defensive driving technics.Must be able to follow a route sheet and adhere to a driving schedule.Knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a vehicle.Ability to read and write.Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment, as related to general knowledge of the vehicle.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the public.Physical RequirementsThis work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.Work could be in a moderately noisy location.Special RequirementsMust be 18 years of age.Applicable training will be provided.Must hold a valid North Carolina Driver's License.Pre-employment Drug Test is requiredPre-employment Criminal/DMV check is requiredClear criminal background checkSafe driving recordHealth CertificateDisclaimerThe preceding job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.
