Position Summary

The Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and hygienic environment within the Giddings State School Infirmary in accordance with the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) contract requirements, federal and state labor standards, and facility security protocols. The position ensures that all cleaning tasks are performed to meet health, safety, and sanitation standards while adhering to applicable OSHA, CDC, and PREA compliance requirements.

Successful background check, drug test, and fingerprints are mandatory.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning Duties:
- Empty and replace liners in all trash and recycling receptacles; dispose of waste in designated collection areas.
- Sweep and mop all common area floors.
- Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, and floors; replenish soap, paper products, and supplies.
- Vacuum carpets and rugs.
- Sweep and mop the medication room.
- Clean interior windows, glass, and frames.
- Wipe down and disinfect waiting area furniture and high-touch surfaces.
- Clean and sanitize water fountains and bottle fill stations.

Three Times per Week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday):
- Dust window sills, filing cabinets, and all common area horizontal surfaces.

Weekly Cleaning:
- Sweep and mop youth rooms (Mondays).
- Sweep and mop storerooms, laundry, lab, and anteroom (Wednesdays).
- Sweep and mop doctor and dentist office floors (Fridays).

Monthly Cleaning (Third Tuesday Each Month):
- Clean all vents and light fixtures.
- Buff floors as scheduled when youth are not present and equipment is available.
- Clean baseboards.
- Spot-clean walls as necessary.

Quarterly Cleaning (First Thursday in January, April, July, October):
- Oil wooden doors using approved wood cleaner.
- Strip and wax floors (when equipment is available and youth are not present).

Documentation and Reporting:
- Complete and sign the Giddings Infirmary Janitorial Log daily, initialing each completed task.
- Report any maintenance, equipment, or supply issues to the Correctional Clinical Associate (CCA) or Facility Business Manager immediately.
- Note all issues, concerns, or supply shortages on the Janitorial Log.

Safety and Compliance

- Follow all applicable OSHA, EPA, CDC, and TJJD safety standards and procedures for cleaning, chemical use, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA) and associated TJJD policies.
- Immediately report any hazardous conditions, bodily fluid incidents, or facility damages.
- Follow proper procedures for bloodborne pathogen cleanup and infectious material handling.
- Adhere to facility security procedures, including controlled access, sign-in/out, and check-in of equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- One (1) year of custodial, janitorial, or sanitation experience preferred, particularly in a healthcare, correctional, or government facility.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Knowledge of safe cleaning methods, disinfecting procedures, and equipment operation.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
- Must pass TJJD background investigation, fingerprinting, drug testing, and security clearance before assignment.
- Must comply with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security E-Verify employment eligibility system.
- Must comply with ADA, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and Texas Labor Code Chapter 21 protections.

Work ScheduleDays: Monday through Friday (excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas)
Hours: After 5:30 PM for 3-4 hours per day. Working Conditions

- Work performed in secure juvenile justice and healthcare environments.
- Exposure to cleaning agents, chemicals, odors, and varying temperatures.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), bending, reaching, and repetitive motions required.
- Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor consistent with TJJD facility standards.
- No possession of firearms, weapons, or contraband permitted under Texas Penal Code §46.01 and TJJD policy.

Compensation and Employment Provisions

- This position is hourly and classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Employment is at-will and contingent upon maintaining security clearance and compliance with TJJD contract requirements.
