Job Title: Emergency Room Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Emergency Room Nurse Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 3 shifts Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: 2+ years of relevant work experience License: Wisconsin Registered Nursing license or active Compact Licensure Certifications: Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC required; ATCN preferred Description: The Registered Nurse position is responsible for coordinating the nursing care of patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Patients may range in age from pediatric to geriatric and may present at any point on the continuum from illness to wellness. This role performs all aspects of direct patient care and collaborates with other disciplines and ancillary services in the care provided. Essential job duties include planning, implementing, and evaluating all levels of patient care. The nurse performs age-appropriate assessments and provides safe and effective care to all ages. Triage is performed according to the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) 5 level triage process. The position requires documentation using medical terminology to maintain a legally acceptable ED record reflecting nursing care and the patient’s response. Collaboration with all providers, peers, ancillary departments, and outside agencies is essential to provide efficient, cost-effective, optimum patient care. The nurse coordinates care needs for multiple patients and prioritizes patient care to ensure timely delivery of quality care to enhance patient flow. Concise verbal communication of patient needs is necessary. The RN advocates for patients through effective communication with providers, peers, and ancillary departments and uses the chain of command as needed. Participation in developing professional goals is expected, with completion of all required education, audits, and in-services in the allotted time frame. Assessment of patient and family knowledge and discharge needs must be conducted to provide appropriate care. The nurse monitors life support and automated technical equipment, performs routine and complex treatments, and administers medications and emergency resuscitation protocols. Insertion and safe administration of IV fluids, blood products, and other parenteral fluids are required. The position calls for a calm and efficient response to crises, directing others clearly. Delegation is used appropriately, and compliance with legal consent, transfer protocols, and legislative requirements is essential. Rapid problem-solving and delivering calm, effective care in high-stress situations are required. Equipment and supply maintenance is part of the job, ensuring that all checklists are completed, supplies are put away, and rooms are stocked as delegated before shift end. Participation in educational experiences for pre-hospital emergency providers and other students is encouraged. Demonstrated proficiency in the documentation of patient care and related computerized patient information is necessary. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
