Natural Resources Permitting Coordinator

Job Summary
A corporate-wide position involving professional technical skill and/or judgment in areas involving an integration of science, legal requirements, operational activities and policy. The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for analysis, design, implementation and management of existing and new environmental programs, regulations and legislation to provide environmental support for business units in a proactive, cost-effective manner that is consistent with NiSource policy and business objectives. Responsibilities encompass a wide-range of environmental program areas with a primary focus on natural resources in accordance with local, state and federal requirements.

Essential Functions

• Preparation and coordination of environmental permitting for a variety of projects and programs supporting NiSource and Columbia Gas of Virginia.

• Coordinates and/or performs required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented and attain 100% compliance, including field investigations to verify conformance with engineering and construction plans.

• Coordinates with affected business partners to align business operational needs and constraints with efficient and effective environmental risk minimization and mitigation.

• Maintains a working knowledge of current environmental regulations and the regulatory process.

• Analyzes and interprets environmental related rules, regulations, policies and guidelines as necessary to meet applicable requirements and/or corporate directives.

• Oversee environmental resource surveys, environmental report and/or assessment preparation, and other environmental permitting.

• Partner with construction field personnel to achieve compliance goals and meet regulatory requirements. Engage in problem solving dialogue and provide recommendations for improvement and compliance.

• Participate in and/or lead meetings, training sessions, and calls with internal stakeholders and external partners including contractors, agencies, and associations.

• Supports and implements compliance and proactive environmental systems and programs.

• Utilizes existing systems, processes and procedures to identify and communicate opportunities for environmental related continuous improvement.

• Integrate business and regulatory needs and coordinate with multiple levels and multiple business partners within the organization to utilize change management tools and skills to facilitate action planning.

• Provides clear, concise, and effective communication with business partners to keep stakeholders informed of project status.

• Be a self-starter with a high degree of initiative and ability to work both independently and within a team.

• Promotes and assures safe working environment and public safety.

Required Qualifications For Position

• Bachelor's Degree in Science, Environmental Science, or related field. Equivalent work experience may be substituted.

• A minimum of 3 – 5 years relevant experience is required for this position.

• Working knowledge of natural resources permitting requirements (e.g., wetland and waterbody crossings, earth disturbance, threatened and endangered species) in the state of Virginia with a specific focus on environmental regulations related to the energy industry.

• Knowledge of energy industry operations.

• Strong learning agility skills and ability to adapt to a consistently changing environment.

• Self-directed aptitude and willing to contribute in a wide array of environmental disciplines.

• Ability to work cooperatively and build consensus within a diverse working group.

• Ability to use professional judgment and work in a self-directed manner with an appropriate level of direct supervision.

• Well-developed analytical and communication skills.

• Competent in the use of electronic spreadsheets and word processing software.

• Knowledge of work management support systems (e.g. SAP S/4 HANA, GIS, Smartsheet).

• Well-developed analytical and communication skills.

• Experience directing third party consultants.

• Understanding of basic principles of project management.

• Approximately 5 - 25% travel.

Preferred Qualifications For Position

• Virginia DEQ Inspector or Plan Reviewer Certification for SWM/ESC.
