In addition to maintaining over 20,000 lane miles of state highway and 4,100 bridges, WSDOT leads an award-winning Active Transportation Plan, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and operates the largest ferry system in the nation!WSDOT is currently seeking an Electrical and Electronic Systems Specialist 3 to serve as the senior technical expert and lead for Chehalis, Wishkah, Heron, Riverside and Simpson bridge. In this critical role, you will help ensure the bridge's electrical, electronic, monitoring, and control systems operate safely and reliably, directly supporting the traveling public and the safety of WSDOT employees. As a subject matter expert, you will provide technical leadership and help coordinate maintenance efforts that keep this vital transportation facility dependable and resilient. Your work will contribute to WSDOT's mission of providing safe, reliable transportation while supporting a culture of quality, stewardship, respect, and belonging.This position performs physically demanding bridge electrical and maintenance work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions, including day, night, and emergency operations. Work may occur near active traffic and water, in confined spaces, and at heights of up to 150 feet, requiring climbing, balancing, lifting, carrying, and operating tools, equipment, and heavy machinery. The position may involve exposure to noise, dust, fumes, hazardous materials, and other highway maintenance hazards. Employees must be prepared to work extended, alternate, and emergency shifts, participate in standby and callback rotations, travel as needed, and respond to emergencies within required timeframes. This position requires the ability to work alternate and emergency shifts as needed. Therefore, responding to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; scheduled and nonscheduled overtime are also required.Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:Perform and lead senior-level electrical and electronic systems maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, installation, and repair on Grays Harbor bridges.Lead, guide, mentor, and assist junior staff in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, installation, and repair of bridge electrical and electronic systems.Maintain and repair standby power generation equipment, automatic transfer switches, programmable logic controllers, HMI displays, electronic motor controllers, weather and navigational equipment, and microwave radio communication systems, including associated network equipment.Inspect and test voltages, electrical connections, and grounding systems to ensure the safety, reliability, and integrity of bridge electrical and electronic systems; identify, document, prioritize, and perform corrective repairs.Plan and manage preventive maintenance and repair activities using a computerized maintenance management program, ensuring work meets department and regulatory agency standards.Ensure crew compliance with WSDOT Standards and Specifications, National Electrical Code (NEC), Washington Administrative Code (WAC), and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).Enforce departmental safety procedures, including electrical hazard awareness, arc flash safety, PPE, job hazard analysis, Pre-Activity Safety Plan (PASP), lock-out/tag-out, confined space, and fall protection requirements.Maintain accurate maintenance, asset inventory, inspection, testing, and safety records; conduct vehicle inspections, participate in safety meetings and training, and instruct junior staff in safe equipment operation and maintenance practices.To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required :To qualify at the EESS Trainee level, the following is required:Introductory Electrical and Electronic Systems Skills: Basic understanding of and/oraptitude for technical, electrical, and/or electronic work.To qualify at the EESS1 level, the following is required:Entry Level Electrical and Electronic Systems Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform sub journey technical, electrical, and/or electronic work. Introductory knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.Safety and Technical Knowledge: Entry-level knowledge and understanding of programmable logic controllers, motor controllers, high-inertial machinery and braking components.ORSuccessful completion of the EESS Trainee in-training plan.To qualify at the EESS2 level, the following is required:Journey Level Electrical and Electronic Systems Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform journey-level technical, electrical, and/or electronic work. Demonstrated knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards.Safety and Technical Knowledge: Journey-level knowledge and understanding of programmable logic controllers, motor controllers, high-inertial machinery and braking components.ORSuccessful completion of the EESS 1 in-training plan.To qualify at the EESS2 level, the following is required:Safety and Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of programmable logic controllers, motor controllers, high-inertial machinery and braking components.Senior/Specialist Electrical and Electronic Systems Skills: Demonstrated ability to perform senior level work with technical, electrical, and/or electronic work. Proven and demonstrate knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and industry standards. Ability to assess PM needs and perform repairs.Leadership: Demonstrated skills to lead EESS in-training employees. Establishes clear expectations, ensures compliance with safety and operational standards, and promotes accountability, teamwork, and employee development through effective communication and coaching.ORSuccessful completion of the EESS 2 in-training plan.In addition to the above, the following are also required:Collaborative Partnership & Customer Focus: Proven ability to build, cultivate, and sustain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advance agency goals and deliver effective service outcomes.Safety & Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of workplace safety standards, electrical and electronic systems work, construction industry practices, and heavy equipment operations applicable to bridge and highway maintenance and transportation infrastructure work. Demonstrated knowledge of structural systems, including concrete, steel, and wood. Demonstrated knowledge of fall-protection PPE and rigging gear; proven safety record working at heights and/or similarly high-risk environments.Communication: Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to convey technical and non-technical information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, ensuring mutual understanding and respect.Conflict Resolution: Ability to address and manage confrontational situations with composure, ensuring workplace challenges are resolved professionally and respectfully.
