A16: $40,918 - $61,130

Transportation Maintenance Tech II

A17: $42,976 - $64,469

Transportation Maintenance Tech III

A18: $45,521 - $71,055

Position Description

Transportation Maintenance Tech I : Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Maintenance Tech II : Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Maintenance Tech III : Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech I, II, III include:
  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech II include:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech III include:

  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

No education required.

Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT):
  • TMT I = No experience required
  • TMT II = 1 year experience*
  • TMT III = 2 years experience*
*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 120 days of employment.

  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Close visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
