Position Overview
Ensures the health and safety of dogs in the care of the Animal Resource Center through extensive use of problem solving, prevention, and disease mitigation strategies to keep pets and people safe. Entry level in the Veterinary Technician occupation under direct supervision of Director of Veterinary Services , assists higher level Veterinary staff in the provision of basic care of the animals at Montgomery County Animal Resource Center with a focus on medical treatments/procedures by providing support to licensed Veterinary Technician(s) and Veterinarian. Assists in administering non-controlled medications, preparation of surgical and non-surgical procedures, assists with the treatment, transporting, restraining and basic care of animals. Collects and prepares laboratory samples and communicates with customers and the public appropriately. Remains empathetic and non-judgmental in all interactions with community members, uses de-escalation techniques and persuasive communication to assist clients. Summary of Job Duties
Primary assistance to Registered Veterinary Technician(s), Veterinarian(s), and Director of Veterinary Services in providing basic medical care, animal care observation, and routine exams; performs pre-surgery evaluations/physicals, pre-surgical/post-surgical preparation of animals and room(s), restrains animals for procedures; administers non-controlled medications, vaccines and basic first aid in compliance with the ORC and provides custodial care to animals (e.g. baths, grooming, distribution of food and water) as needed for continuation of quality care while at medical clinic. With a focus on providing assistance to Veterinary staff, may communicate animal status as it relates to medical conditions, treatment options, and directions; administers subcutaneous injections; performs radiographs; extracts and obtains bacterial streak(s) and cultures; provides care for animals (e.g., feeds, waters, cleans, enriches and exercises animals); removes sutures, drains and staples; appropriately cleans and disinfects clinic equipment, area/rooms and related kennel areas in accordance with established practices. Works with kennel staff as appropriate to identify animals appropriate for adoption.
May perform euthanasia of injured, sick and unadoptable animals by established and approved methods. Prepares carcasses for disposal and disposes of animal remains according to state health regulations and established practices.
With a focus in aiding Veterinary Staff responsible for maintaining accurate records and documentation, schedules surgeries and treatments providing information to the public and communicates with co-workers/customers to address concerns regarding animals being treated within the clinic area. Understands and interprets animal body language; demonstrates safe animal handling and restraint techniques. Performs routine and thorough documentation of care provided, behavioral observations, health concerns, medications administered, and other related care. Requires working knowledge of Ohio law regarding domestic animals, dog licensing, and dog control.
Under direction of the Director of Veterinary Services, works closely with Registered Veterinary Technicians to ensure clinic processes and procedures are followed in order to maintain the efficacy of clinic operations; may work alongside staff to escort individuals through kennels to identify lost dogs, conduct appropriate interviews to ensure responsible placements, and provide basic information to individuals about sheltered animals. Demonstrates familiarity with pet retention, rehoming, behavioral training, veterinary care, and other resources to connect pets in need. Applies extensive use of judgement to make sound and safe decisions. Gathers information, assesses the situation, and provides the appropriate service(s).
(Performs Related Duties as Required) Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Four (4) years of Veterinary Assistant experience; OR alternative, equivalent evidence of the Minimum Class Requirements.
Driving Requirement : Must maintain a current valid United States driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Training and Development: Must obtain Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification and ASP Baton certification within six (6) months of hire date. Must maintain certification and licensure. Supplemental Information
