Buchanan Community Schools is welcoming applicants for a Van Driver. The district seeks a qualified individual to drive a school van to transport students over specified routes according to time schedules while complying with traffic regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

• Drive assigned students, making safety and efficiency your number-one priority
• Driving students to and from schools on schedule in all weather conditions
• Driving a van on a specific route and making safety a priority by following traffic laws
• Complete pre-trip and post-trip checks, report any issues on a service request form, and submit to the supervisor
• Comply with all traffic ordinances
• Report accidents, and work or pupil injuries to the designated person(s)
• Conduct emergency evacuation drills as directed
• Perform van housekeeping duties, which include inside and outside cleanliness
• Fuel vehicles as needed
• Prepare and submit all written reports required on a timely basis
• Attend workshops and training sessions as required
• Maintain knowledge of State and District rules and regulations concerning the transportation of students
• Assist in the establishment and adjustment of van routes
• Routes vary from 4 to 6 hours per day
• Displays tact and courtesy when dealing with students, staff, and others
• Maintains regular, reliable, and punctual attendance
• Any other duties or responsibilities as deemed appropriate by the administration
• The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the District

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises students while transporting them

• Education and/or Experience
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
• Valid Michigan Chauffeur Driver's License
• Ability to pass driver's license check and criminal record check, as required by the State of Michigan
• Language Skills
• Ability to read a limited number of two and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between a series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
• Mathematical Skills
• Ability to add and subtract two to six-digit numbers and to multiply and divide by 10's and 100's.
• Reasoning Ability
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems.
• Other Skills and Abilities
• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; to read and understand maps, pass the State Skill Test, and State Written Test; to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form; to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand; will frequently bend or twist at the neck and hips more than an average person; frequently repeats the same hand, arm, or finger potion; uses hand strength to grasp tools and in continuously driving on the job. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
• The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. The employee will frequently drive while performing the duties of this job.

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces; must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with the public and coworkers; has the direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.

• Calendar: Up to 186 Days
• Compensation: $16.22/hr.
