Neuromuscular Research Physical Therapist

School of Medicine, Stanford University — Neurology Department. Research Physical Therapist (Clinical Evaluator) Position. Duties Provide subject matter expertise in a specialized area of physical therapy within the scope of California licensing Board and American Physical Therapy Association scope of practice. Evaluate, assess, and provide therapeutic intervention plans for individuals living with a neuromuscular disease. Evaluate and assess research participants (pediatric and adult) using disease‑specific outcome measures. Adhere to research protocols, conduct reliable research evaluations, integrate data, and apply critical thinking required for good clinical practice and data integrity. Provide ongoing verbal and written communication regarding the research evaluations and plan of care. Coordinate research visits and clinical care in collaboration with Principal Investigators, Neurologists, Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs), and study sponsors. Participate in clinical teaching of multi‑disciplinary teams and/or provide in‑services to Stanford Medical Center staff. Mentor physical therapy students as appropriate. Implement protocol‑specific assessments and monitor participant safety during functional testing. Maintain strict adherence to study manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Communicate research evaluations, adverse events, data quality, and participant eligibility status to the study team. Complete research documentation and billing for services in compliance with Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) billing practices and clinical trial budgets. Work on projects within the area of clinical specialty, such as abstract/manuscript submissions, protocol development, or reliability training. May evaluate the educational needs of the staff regarding outcome measures and serve as a resource in meeting those needs. May participate in the development and evaluation of patient care services, research workflows, and departmental policies and procedures to optimize trial efficiency. Other duties may also be assigned. Desired Qualifications Master's degree in physical therapy and three years of experience working as a full‑time Physical Therapist with individuals with neurological or neuromuscular disease, or a combination of education and relevant experience. Ability to establish effective relationships and communication with staff, clinical leadership team, physicians, other health care professionals/collaborators, and patients and families. Proficiency (or certification) in administering NMD‑specific standardized assessments. Advanced clinical reasoning in patient evaluations, treatment, and research design. Work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary clinical and research team. Knowledge of evidence‑based practice techniques, good clinical practice and research certifications required for research evaluations. Experience with Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems such as RedCap and a track record of good source documentation (ALCOA+ principles). Willingness to undergo rigorous training and annual inter‑rater reliability testing to maintain evaluator certification. GCP Training. Education & Experience (required) Two years experience working in a pediatric, adult, research or neurology outpatient clinic, or a combination of education and relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (required) Knowledge of Code of Ethics and performance standards as outlined by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements. Knowledge of basic business aspects of rehabilitation services including billing practices and equipment utilization. Ability to relate to, develop and implement treatment plans. Accurate documentation of evaluation, treatment and discharge plans. Sound clinical reasoning to determine appropriate patient interventions; demonstrates safety awareness, judgment and problem analysis and resolution. Skill in planning and conducting a program of rehabilitative therapeutic activities specific to the population served. Knowledge of basic principles of clinical supervision and instruction. Ability to clinically supervise, train and evaluate students/interns. Establish effective relationships and communication with staff, clinical leadership, physicians, other health care professionals, patients and families. Advanced clinical reasoning in patient treatment. Work independently and as part of a functional team. Certifications & Licenses Licensed Physical Therapist by the state of California. First Aid, CPR and AED certification for health care providers. HIPAA training. Physical Requirements Frequently stand/walk, perform desk‑based computer tasks, and lift up to 10 pounds. Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, lift up to 20 pounds. Rarely kneel/crawl, use a telephone, write by hand, scrub, operate foot and hand controls, lift up to 40 pounds.
