About the Position

Job Title: Med Surg RN Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Nights, every 3rd weekend Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: 1 year License: Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS Must-Have: One previous travel assignment, proficient in starting IVs, experience in orthopedics Description: Unit has 25 beds with a nurse to patient ratio of 1:4 during the day and 1:5 at night, based on acuity. Required certifications include BLS, ACLS, and PALS. Common diagnoses include heavy orthopedic post-operative cases such as hips, knees, spine, shoulders, general post-operative care, pneumonia, CHF, COPD, and care for the geriatric population with multiple comorbidities. Pain control is monitored overnight post-surgery. Nurses are required to titrate drips including heparin, insulin, cardizem, levophed, and dopamine. There are no monitor technicians; nurses are expected to read their own telemetry strips. Charge nurses rarely take a patient assignment, focusing instead on discharges and supervising. Nurse aids are available with a ratio of 2 per shift. Respiratory therapy equipment includes CPAP and BiPAP, but there is no dedicated respiratory therapist on site. Shifts are three 12-hour blocks from 7 AM to 7 PM, with scheduling managed by the unit manager. Weekend work is required every third weekend, along with a rotational holiday requirement every third holiday. There is no call or standby requirement, and no floating to other units is expected. Scrub color is navy blue, with a navy scrub jacket permitted and any color or print for under shirts. Charting is done using the EPIC system.
