Land Surveyor
This position assists with managing survey projects, including research, boundary analysis, construction calculations, legal descriptions, AutoCAD drafting, map submittals, subdivision processing and directing field crews. This position is also responsible for maintaining correspondence with clients, and mentor staff.
Duties And Responsibilities
General Duties:
- Meet budgets and deadlines.
- Timely submittal of billing files, timecards, and reimbursables.
- Business travel as necessary to support the firm and clients.
- Meet your chargeability target as set annually by the company.
- Share profession-related talents with others in the firm.
- Oversee and train temporary help when necessary.
- Follow all Surveying workgroup policies and procedures.
- Interact with clients and represent our firm in a professional manner.
- Uphold our firm’s high standard of quality.
- Work in a collaborative fashion with the Surveying team and other workgroups.
- Customarily and regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment which will affect matters of consequence to the business or our customers.
- Other duties as necessary to support the success of the company.
Building Relationships & Networking:
- Communicate effectively and proactively with peers, employees, and management.
- Corresponds with clients and agencies in writing and on the phone.
Project-related:
- Manage survey projects.
- Resolve complex boundary problems (sequential and simultaneous conveyances).
- Research for projects, including projects in other counties.
- Perform calculations for construction projects (e.g., rough grade, sewer, water, curb and building stakes).
- Monitor budgets and review pre-bills.
- Perform fieldwork as necessary.
- Responsible for mapping and processing of tentative maps, records of survey, parcel maps, tract maps and lot line adjustments.
- Responsible for preparation and review of ALTA maps.
- Routinely prepares maps using Civil3d software.
- Prepare legal descriptions.
- Responsible for assisting and assigning and reviewing field crew’s work.
- Interpret legal descriptions.
- Supervise Survey Technicians in the Surveying Group.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Review and check the work of other licensed land surveyors.
- Quality control.
- Responsible for managing topographic, boundary, GPS control and construction staking surveys.
- Analyze problem situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
- General AutoCAD knowledge.
- Coordinate geometry skills:
- Knowledge of mathematics involved with plane and geodetic surveying, including working with state plane coordinates.
- Ability to work in metric or imperial units in the field and office.
- Construction surveying skills:
- Keep abreast of revisions/change orders.
- Ability to work cooperatively and productively with clients, contractors and superintendents in the field involving all aspects of surveying.
- Form working relationships with clients and contractors.
- Monitor job progress against the project budget.
- Reviews billing, and when extra services are required on construction staking jobs, completes “extra stake authorization” for extra services and obtain signature from project superintendent.
- Understanding of the principals involved with the execution and resolution of boundary surveys, including public lands retracements.
- Prepares all boundary calculations, lot closure calculations and methods and reasoning statements for map submittals to agencies.
- Prepares or supervises the preparation of certificate and map sheets.
- Provides calculations for horizontal control plans, site plans and improvement plan base sheets for engineering staff.
- Plots record easements and writes legal descriptions and exhibits.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Surveying or related field experience
- Minimum of six (6) years of experience
- Current knowledge of professional codes, laws, computer applications, and trends
Licensing and Certification:
- Required:
- California Professional Land Surveyor’s license
- Valid California driver’s license
- Ability to drive a vehicle for company business and to comply with our firm’s Motor Vehicle Policy
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill:
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Land Desktop software, including surfaces, volumes, stationing and profiles.
- Knowledge of the Land Surveyor’s Act, the Subdivision Map Act and other statutes as they relate to surveying.
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to work independently on the preparation of all recorded documents (i.e., Records of Survey, Parcel Maps, Tract Maps, Deeds, and Easements).
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to reduce data for resolution for boundary surveys.
- GPS post processing skills preferred.
- Ability to review pre-bills, billing and invoicing for projects.
- Ability to receive phone calls from clients and contractors regarding work requests.
- Ability to perform complex research of record documents, including maps in other counties, BLM records for original field notes, Cal Trans Control and NGS State Plane coordinate data.
- Able to work well in a team setting.
- Ability to lead and mentor staff.
- Excellent customer/client service skills and multi-tasking abilities.
- Experience with Trimble Business Center.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office including Outlook, Word and Excel.

- Requires the ability to work a minimum of eight (8) hours in variable weather conditions setting up to 100 stakes/day with a 4 lb. sledgehammer.
- Requires ability to walk or hike in rough terrain up to 8 hours/day.
- Requires ability to sit up to 8 hours/day.
- Requires ability to use telescope on total station.
- Requires regular exposure to outside weather conditions (rain, heat, fog).
- Requires ability to perform surveys in mountainous and rugged terrain, in hot weather, next to heavy equipment, and with exposure to hazards such as poison oak, snakes, etc.
- Requires frequently exposure to dust or airborne particles.
- Occasionally requires lifting or moving up to 50 pounds (and ability to lift GPS equipment into truck).
- Occasionally requires exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and/or risk of radiation and vibration.
- Rarely requires balancing in high precarious places (e.g. walls, fences, piles of dirt, etc.).
