Substitute School Nutrition Food

Assists the school nutrition department with the preparation and service of school meals to the students on an as-needed basis.

Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is preferred.

Minimum Experience: None required. Public school food service as an assistant or substitute is preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Effective written and oral communication
• Food preparation T.I.D. 4a must be completed within five (5) years of employment
• Organizational and interpersonal skills
• Ability to read and apply basic math skills
• ServSafe Certification must be completed within the first two (2) years of employment

The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

• Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance
• Exhibits professionalism
• Prepare, cook, serve, store, and label food in accordance with accepted institutional procedures under the supervision of the school nutrition assistant manager and manager
• Read and follow both written and verbal instructions related to the daily production schedule, menus, and standardized recipes for food preparation
• Keep class rosters up to date and accurate (daily), including names and eligibility status of all students
• Maintains records in a neat and orderly fashion
• Maintains daily cleanliness and care of computer equipment (Reports problems to the manager)
• Clerks will observe all trays of food to determine that they contain a reimbursable meal and if any supplemental sales are added to the tray
• Records all student and adult meals, collects appropriate monies and makes change during meal service
• Collects all prepayment money and enters accurately into the correct accounts
• Counts all cash drawer money to record for daily cash reconciliation
• Prepares notices for low balance and charge amounts to be sent home with students
• Adhere to Federal, State, local policies, procedures, regulations, and personnel standards
• Follow departmental standards of conduct, grooming, personal hygiene, and dress
• Follow all sanitation procedures and regulations and keep work areas neat and clean
• Use appropriate utensils and gloves when preparing and serving food items
• Wash, sanitize, and store all kitchen utensils and scrub counters and floors daily
• Operate and clean kitchen equipment and serving carts daily, and report repairs needed to the manager
• Keep records of foods utilized, left-over, and disposed of daily
• Assist in promoting good public relations with students, teachers, and administration
• Support activities that complement the total educational process of the school
• Attend all state and locally required training
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is an as needed position. Typically no more than 7 hours per day, generally Monday through Friday.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Use of hands in hot water and chemicals approved for use in the program. Routine physical activities required to fulfill job responsibilities; able to lift and carry a minimum of 30 pounds; lift heavy items from a stooping position; lift with the use of a ladder in high places. Able to complete and pass a physical examination when required.
