General NotesThe University of Texas at Austin's Planning, Design and Construction team seeks an individual to serve as a Sheet Metal Technician in our Mechanical Shop. Selection made by committee and hiring manager based on review of online applications and results of personal interviews. Some evening, weekend, and holiday work required.
Perform journey-level fabrication and installation of sheet metal components and systems for campus construction, renovation and repair projects. Assist other shop trades personnel with project-related duties and in support of campus special events.
Responsibilities- Fabricate and repair project components, including air ducts, vents, mixing boxes, exhaust systems, hoods, drain pans, other mechanical system components, containers, counters, gutters/downspouts, lockers, and other various equipment, structures, and objects.
- Provide timely and accurate processing of shop written and electronic documentation, including material requisitions, timesheets, and daily labor reports. Develop estimates and order materials. Assist team members in solving work-related problems at jobsites. Maintain high standards for employee conduct, productivity, and safety.
- Promote and maintain frequent communications and positive relations with all stakeholders. Promote a culture of teamwork within shop and with other shops. Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of projects. Emphasize accountability for meeting schedule commitments. Practice and promote the values and goals of the university and the hiring department. Ensure projects are executed in accordance with project requirements, campus standards, and applicable codes.
- Safely operate sheet metal-forming machines, including shear, bending roll, brake, drill press, folder, punch, cutters, crimpers, and related hand tools. Operate soldering/welding equipment in the fabrication or repair of project components and equipment fabricated with sheet metal, including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, lead, steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel. Perform complex design, installation, modification, and repair of various facility systems.
- Assist other shop trades personnel with project-related duties, including demolition, plumbing, pipe fitting, and insulation. Support other project-related activities, such as incidental furniture moves, equipment connections, and appliance setups. Provide support to campus special events. Promote teamwork and demonstrate a positive attitude.
- Support and promote university safety procedures, in coordination with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). Follow safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment, shop and jobsite cleanliness, and compliance with published policies and procedures for safe operation of shop equipment and vehicles. Ensure appropriate handling of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead, mold, and silica.
- Modify and repair campus facilities and equipment fabricated with sheet metal, including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, lead, steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel. Perform complex design, installation, modification, and repair of various facility systems.
- Support the maintenance and operation of the shop. Clean and adjust tools. Maintain and properly secure shop, tools, equipment, and vehicles. Assist with annual shop vehicle, equipment, and warehouse inventory. Promote and maintain a clean and safe work environment in the shop and at job sites. Analyze work orders, plans, drawings, and specifications, and develop pattern layouts for the fabrication of project components.
- Drive UT vehicle to and from job sites to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials. Drive off-campus to purchase and pickup materials and equipment for projects.
- Attend management-directed meetings and training. Accomplish other duties as assigned.
High school graduation or GED. Three years of demonstrated journey-level sheet metal experience using hand and power tools applicable to the trade. Before final offer can be made, successful applicant must provide a current driver's license and acceptable driving record for the most recent 36 months. Texas driving history will be confirmed online during selection process; applicant must provide out-of-state driving history, if previously licensed in another state. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred QualificationsAssociates degree or graduation from vocational technical training related to sheet metal fabrication, welding, or facility renovation/construction. Five years or more of above experience. Additional experience with plumbing, insulation, thermostats, mixing boxes, HVAC controls, or related mechanical systems. Demonstrated ability to produce quality work from project drawings, specifications, construction standards, and written/verbal instructions with or without direct supervision. Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and communicate with building clients, coworkers, supervisors, project team members, and other stakeholders in a team environment. Experience working in a large university, commercial, or industrial physical plant.
Driving RequiredThis job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
