Job Description:\n\nOverview Medical Director, Hematology and Medical Oncology VHC Health – Arlington, Virginia Full-Time | Main Hospital Campus VHC Health is seeking an experienced, visionary, and collaborative Board-Certified Hematologist/Medical Oncologist to serve as the inaugural Medical Director, Hematology and Medical Oncology at our flagship hospital campus in Arlington, Virginia. This is a unique opportunity for a senior oncology leader to build and shape a comprehensive hematology and medical oncology program from the ground up within one of the highest-performing independent health systems in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. The ideal candidate will bring significant clinical expertise, demonstrated leadership experience, and a passion for developing innovative, patient-centered oncology services in a growing community-based academic environment. This full-time employed leadership position combines active clinical practice with strategic program development, physician leadership, operational oversight, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Position Overview The Medical Director, Hematology and Medical Oncology will serve as the clinical and strategic leader responsible for developing, launching, and growing VHC Health’s hematology and medical oncology program. Because this is a new and expanding service line, the organization seeks a physician leader with substantial experience in oncology program building, service-line growth, multidisciplinary care coordination, and operational leadership. This role is ideal for a physician who is energized by the opportunity to establish clinical infrastructure, recruit and mentor providers, standardize care pathways, and shape the future vision of oncology care delivery across the health system. The Medical Director will work closely with executive leadership, hospital administration, nursing, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, infusion services, pharmacy, pathology, and support services to create a high-quality, integrated cancer program focused on exceptional patient outcomes and experience. Key Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities · Provide comprehensive outpatient and inpatient hematology and medical oncology care · Evaluate and manage patients with solid tumors and benign/malignant hematologic disorders · Develop individualized treatment plans utilizing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and supportive oncology services · Perform new patient consultations, follow-up visits, treatment monitoring, and survivorship planning · Participate in shared call coverage and inpatient oncology consultations · Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate evidence-based cancer care · Review pathology, imaging, molecular testing, and laboratory data to guide treatment decisions · Manage treatment toxicities and symptom management needs · Maintain timely and accurate documentation within the electronic medical record Medical Director Leadership Responsibilities · Program Development & Growth · Lead the development and expansion of the hematology and medical oncology service line · Build clinical workflows, operational infrastructure, and care delivery models · Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning and market growth initiatives · Assist in physician and APP recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts · Develop relationships with referring physicians and regional healthcare partners · Identify opportunities for program expansion, subspecialty growth, and community outreach · Clinical Leadership · Establish evidence-based clinical standards, pathways, and best practices · Lead multidisciplinary tumor boards and cancer conferences · Promote high-quality, coordinated, patient-centered oncology care · Support integration across inpatient, outpatient, infusion, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology services · Provide mentorship and clinical guidance to physicians, APPs, nursing, and staff · Quality & Accreditation · Oversee oncology quality initiatives, outcomes tracking, and performance improvement efforts · Ensure ongoing compliance with Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards and accreditation requirements · Monitor clinical quality metrics, peer review activities, patient experience scores, and operational benchmarks · Champion patient safety, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based oncology practices · Operational & Administrative Leadership · Collaborate with hospital leadership on oncology operations, staffing, workflow optimization, and service integration · Participate in budget planning, operational strategy, and resource development · Support infusion center operations, scheduling optimization, and clinic efficiency initiatives · Serve as the primary physician liaison between oncology providers and health system leadership Qualifications · MD or DO from an accredited medical school · Completion of an ACGME-accredited Hematology/Medical Oncology fellowship · Board Certification in Medical Oncology required · Eligibility for unrestricted Virginia medical licensure · Minimum of 5 years of post-training clinical oncology experience strongly preferred · Prior leadership experience as a Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Program Director, or oncology service-line leader preferred · Demonstrated experience in program development, clinical operations, or oncology growth initiatives strongly preferred · Commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, and patient-centered care Position Highlights · Opportunity to build and lead a growing hematology and medical oncology program from the ground up · Full-time employed physician leadership position · Combination of clinical practice and executive-level medical directorship · Strong administrative, operational, and nursing support · Highly collaborative physician culture · Independent health system with agility and physician influence · Access to a diverse and growing patient population in Northern Virginia and the Washington, DC region Compensation & Benefits · Competitive physician executive compensation package · Leadership stipend plus productivity and quality incentives · Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits · Generous paid time off and CME allowance · Retirement plan options · Malpractice insurance with tail coverage · Relocation assistance available ResponsibilitiesAt VHC Health, every role contributes to exceptional care, better outcomes, and stronger communities.In addition to your base compensation, VHC Health offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage (subject to eligibility requirements), as well as additional wellness and retirement benefits designed to support our employees and their families.VHC Health is committed to wage transparency and equitable pay practices. Qualifications Purpose & Scope: The physician is a member of the healthcare team who works in collaboration with other staff to provide comprehensive healthcare services to patients. The scope of practice of each physician is defined through the health system’s credentialing and privileging committee. The Physician supports objectives, budget, and performance metrics at the individual level.Supports all medical activities at the individual level including implementation of quality control standards, risk management and compliance programs.The role of a physician is to provide quality clinical care to those individuals who have chosen VHC Health in a timely manner to meet the needs of our patients. Education: Doctorate from accredited medical school is required. Experience: Five years of medical/surgical experience is required. Certifications/Licensure: Licensed to Practice Medicine by the Virginia Department of Health Professions is required.
