Head of Underwriting About the Company Innovative insurance technology (InsurTech) company Industry Insurance Type Privately Held About the Role The Company is seeking a Head of Underwriting to spearhead the launch and scaling of a new underwriting platform. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and launching the initial product strategy, appetite, and underwriting framework to lay the groundwork for scalable growth. This role also involves building an early broker distribution playbook, establishing strategic relationships, and partnering with the executive team and reinsurance broker to ensure the capacity and reinsurance structure align with the company's growth targets. The Head of Underwriting will lead the recruitment of strategic underwriting personnel and work towards building a high-performing underwriting team. Applicants for the Head of Underwriting position should have a background in property underwriting, with a focus on HOA, Condo, Habitational, or Community Association business, and a strong network of relationships with West Coast retail and wholesale brokers. An entrepreneurial mindset, comfort in a start-up environment, and a strong familiarity with insurtech platforms and tech-enabled underwriting are essential. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with excellent communication skills, capable of mentoring a team, and will be motivated by the opportunity for equity participation and long-term growth. Experience in building rate plans, product design, and underwriting guidelines, as well as in securing carrier capacity, reinsurance, or delegated authority agreements, is a plus. The role requires a mission-driven individual who is data-first in their approach to underwriting decisions and is passionate about expanding access to affordable insurance in catastrophe-prone states.
