Firefighter
The City of Maitland is seeking a dedicated individual to join its Fire Rescue Department as a Firefighter. This position is located in the Fire Operations section and involves unusual and difficult work at a subordinate level. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief or assigned designee. This position is considered an emergency/disaster position.
The job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and the employee, and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change. This is a highly technical and responsible position that requires a great deal of initiative and ability to perform specialized work.
During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.
Prior to submitting an application for employment as a Firefighter, you MUST successfully complete both the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT) and the FireTEAM assessments. The National Testing Network (NTN) offers both CPAT and FireTEAM. To learn more about CPAT and FireTEAM and to sign up for testing go to Tests are offered multiple times a week, including Saturdays. During the registration process, make certain you select City of Maitland to receive your test results; upon completion of CPAT and FireTEAM your test results will automatically be forwarded to us.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must possess High School Diploma or equivalent as recognized by the State of Florida Department of Education.
- Must hold current certification and licensing as Paramedic in accordance with State of Florida, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Florida Administrative 64J-1.009.
- Must possess and maintain a certificate Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter in accordance to F.S. 633.412.
- Must possess and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license in the capacity required by law for operators of emergency vehicles.
- Must possess, or obtain shortly after hire, certificate of successful completion in an Emergency Vehicle Operator's Course (EVOC) or equivalent.
- Employees in this position are required to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS- 700 within 30 days of employment and the ICS-100 and ICS-200 within 90 days of employment, or from the date of taking the position. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your supervisor.
- Must meet all pre-employment requirements in accordance with state and department standards.
Essential Job Functions/Other Job Functions:
Work primarily involves the protection of life and property, and frequently demands strenuous exertion under dangerous conditions where personal injury could occur, such as: fire, smoke, extreme heat and cold, heights, cramped spaces, toxic or irritant gases or chemicals, explosive situations, falling debris, water rescue, and exposure to communicable diseases. Responds quickly to emergency and non-emergency alarms and performs according to training level and industry standards. Operates fire and rescue apparatus. Exhibits safe working habits and driving practices. Maintains knowledge of city buildings and streets. Prepares and enters reports relating to job. Provides routine check of "vital signs" for the public. Tests and maintains hydrants, hoses, vehicles, and auxiliary equipment. Participates and engages in non-emergency company programs such as: pre-fire planning, public education and fire prevention. Assumes and carries out duties and functions of a relief driver or engineer, as required. Secures and maintains departmental issued equipment and clothing on a continuous basis. Safely uses and operates all fire equipment, tools, and other items as necessary including the proper use and wear of safety clothing and accessories and self-contained breathing apparatus at emergency scenes. Maintains certification and performs Emergency Medical Services and Rescue Services to the Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and level as called upon by the public and prescribed by the City Medical Director. Transports medical and trauma patients safely to area hospitals while providing indicated care. Ensures readiness of assigned vehicle and equipment. Deals courteously and firmly with the public to establish and maintain good public relations. Maintains a safety conscious attitude and projects this to fellow employees. Participates in classroom and drill ground training exercises. May function as a Field Internship Training (F.I.T) Paramedic Preceptor after one (1) year as an autonomous Paramedic. Maintains cleanliness of station. Performs other duties as assigned.
Critical Skills/Expertise:
Members of this classification must have considerable working knowledge of fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical practices, hazardous materials mitigation, victim rescue practices; and municipal streets to include overall geography and properties, working knowledge of municipal water distribution, working knowledge/familiarity of the fire protection and extinguishing systems, and departmental policies and procedures. This position requires a continuous verification of knowledge and skills required for effective work performance through classroom and drill ground training exercises. Remains calm in tense situations. Maintains physical fitness level as defined by department program. Maintains knowledge of Maitland Fire Department Rules and Regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures.
