Job Title: Chemistry Lab Technician Job Description
The Chemistry Lab Technician supports the Environmental Affairs group by performing hands-on laboratory testing and analysis on environmental samples collected from generation facilities and other company sites. This role receives, logs, prepares, and analyzes water, oil, and other materials in accordance with standard operating procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices. The technician helps determine water quality, evaluates waste streams, and supports proper handling and disposal methods to ensure environmental compliance. The position requires meticulous documentation, adherence to quality control protocols, and close collaboration with field sampling teams, environmental engineers, and compliance staff to deliver accurate, timely, and defensible analytical results.
Responsibilities- Receive, log, and organize environmental samples such as water, oil, and other materials from generation facilities and additional company locations.
- Prepare samples for analysis in accordance with standard operating procedures and regulatory requirements, including TCLP sample preparation and other specialized methods.
- Perform laboratory analyses for water quality testing, oil transfers and screening, and waste characterization to determine regulatory status and appropriate disposal methods.
- Utilize analytical chemistry techniques, including titration and other quantitative methods, to generate reliable data.
- Follow established chain-of-custody procedures to ensure sample integrity and traceability throughout the testing process.
- Maintain strict quality control and quality assurance practices, including calibration, verification, and routine checks of laboratory instrumentation and methods.
- Document all laboratory activities, observations, and results accurately and completely to support environmental compliance and reporting obligations.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, ensuring it operates safely and effectively, and coordinate maintenance or repairs as needed.
- Develop and/or maintain laboratory procedures and standard operating procedures, updating documentation as methods or regulatory requirements evolve.
- Collaborate closely with field sampling teams, environmental engineers, and compliance staff to clarify testing needs, interpret results, and support environmental compliance programs.
- Handle routine but critical testing tasks efficiently while maintaining strong attention to detail and safe laboratory practices.
- Contribute to a safe laboratory environment by following all safety protocols, using appropriate personal protective equipment, and reporting any hazards or incidents.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or a related scientific discipline.
- At least 15 semester credit hours in chemistry as part of the degree program.
- Laboratory experience utilizing analytical reference methods and instrumentation to perform chemical analyses.
- Experience applying analytical chemistry techniques, including titration, in a laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance principles in analytical laboratories.
- Ability to develop and/or maintain laboratory procedures and standard operating procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when performing routine but critical testing.
- Demonstrated ability to follow safe laboratory practices and comply with environmental and regulatory standards.
- Ability to document laboratory activities and results clearly, accurately, and in a timely manner.
- Strong collaboration skills for working with field sampling teams, environmental engineers, and compliance staff.
- Prior laboratory experience in an environmental, industrial, utility, or regulated setting is preferred.
- Experience performing environmental, water, or waste characterization testing.
- Background in biology or related life sciences in addition to chemistry coursework.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements related to environmental sampling, waste characterization, and proper disposal methods.
- Experience working within a utility-scale environmental program or similar large-scale industrial environment.
- Ability to manage multiple samples and tasks simultaneously while maintaining data integrity.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills to support environmental compliance and reporting.
This position is based in a chemistry laboratory within an Environmental Affairs setting at a utility-related facility. The work involves hands-on testing of environmental samples such as water, oil, and other materials collected from generation facilities and various company sites. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Calera, AL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
