Industrial Maintenance Technician
Leggett & Platt, Inc.
Electrical Maintenance Technician (Industrial) – Remex/Spuhl Specialty Equipment Job Summary We are seeking a mid-level Electrical Maintenance Technician to support critical manufacturing assets at Br 788, with primary focus on legacy Remex coilers and Spuhl equipment. This role is part of a planned knowledge-transfer and succession effort: the successful candidate will train closely with an experienced senior maintenance technician to learn equipment‑specific troubleshooting methods, failure modes, and recovery procedures that are essential to keeping the line running. This position performs hands‑on electrical and controls troubleshooting and repair (including PLC‑controlled equipment), supports preventive/predictive maintenance, and helps improve equipment reliability. The team must maintain older Remex machinery while the site transitions to new technology; therefore, the role requires strong fundamentals, disciplined safety practices, and the ability to diagnose problems methodically, document findings, and contribute to practical upgrades and standardization over time. Key Manufacturing Machinery Supported Remex coilers (legacy systems) – electrical panels, control circuits, sensors/interlocks, drives, and machine sequencing Spuhl equipment – electrical/controls troubleshooting, safety circuits, and machine recovery PLC‑controlled industrial machinery – I/O troubleshooting, fault isolation, and equipment restart support Industrial drive systems (including B&R drive platforms where applicable) Common supporting systems: 24VDC control, relays/contactors, sensors/encoders, solenoids, and basic pneumatics Key Responsibilities (Keep the Line Running) Respond to equipment downtime events; troubleshoot electrical/control issues on Remex coilers and Spuhl equipment with urgency, discipline, and a safety‑first mindset. Diagnose faults using schematics, wiring diagrams, PLC I/O status, and test equipment (multimeter and other tools) to isolate root causes efficiently. Perform hands‑on electrical repair: sensors, relays/contactors, 24VDC control circuits, solenoids, safety interlocks, basic motor/drive troubleshooting, and panel/component replacement as needed. Execute and improve preventive maintenance (PM) routines; identify repeat failures and recommend changes to PM frequency, standards, or methods. Document work in the CMMS with clear problem statements, troubleshooting steps, root cause, corrective action, and follow‑up recommendations. Support reliability improvements during the transition from legacy Remex equipment to new technology, including wiring corrections, panel organization/labeling, standardization, and practical upgrades as approved. Partner with production to communicate equipment status, safe restart conditions, and temporary containment vs. permanent corrective action plans. Capture and transfer equipment “tribal knowledge” by shadowing the senior technician, creating troubleshooting guides/checklists, documenting common failure modes, and maintaining recovery procedures. Follow all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), NFPA 70E electrical safety practices, and required PPE standards; promote safe work practices across the team. Assist with machine moves/new installations as needed, including conduit/cable routing, wiring pulls, and clean terminations. Support a continuous improvement culture: participate in problem‑solving activities, suggest countermeasures, and help train/coach others as appropriate for the role. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Required Qualifications 3+ years of industrial electrical maintenance experience (or equivalent combination of experience and formal technical training) with the ability to troubleshoot independently. Strong industrial electrical fundamentals: AC/DC circuits, relays/contactors, motor controls, 24VDC control, and safe test/verification practices. Working knowledge of PLC‑controlled equipment: ability to navigate basic machine states, review I/O, and support troubleshooting in partnership with controls resources. Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts. Ability to safely use test equipment (multimeter, continuity/insulation testing as applicable) to isolate faults. Demonstrated safety leadership and strict adherence to LOTO and NFPA 70E practices, including arc‑flash awareness and required PPE. Strong troubleshooting approach, documentation habits, and communication skills (able to explain findings and next steps clearly to production and maintenance leadership). Willingness and ability to participate in planned knowledge transfer: shadowing, documenting procedures, and building equipment‑specific troubleshooting resources. High school diploma or GED. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting coil handling/coil processing equipment; direct experience with Remex coilers and/or Spuhl equipment is a strong plus. Experience troubleshooting industrial drive systems; familiarity with B&R drive platforms and/or B&R Automation Studio is a plus. Experience with sensors, encoders, safety circuits (including safety relays), and basic pneumatics/hydraulics interface troubleshooting. Familiarity with industrial networking (e.g., POWERLINK, Ethernet/IP, Modbus) and common troubleshooting methods. CMMS proficiency and demonstrated root‑cause analysis skills (5‑Why, cause‑and‑effect thinking, corrective/preventive actions). Experience supporting modernization or migration efforts (maintaining legacy machinery while integrating or commissioning replacement technology). Ability to install conduit, pull cable, and perform clean wiring terminations with strong workmanship standards. 90/180/365‑Day Success Milestones First 90 Days Complete required safety training and demonstrate consistent compliance with LOTO and NFPA 70E practices. Learn the Br 788 area equipment layout and identify critical Remex/Spuhl assets, safety devices, and common downtime points. Demonstrate ability to read prints, trace circuits, and troubleshoot common electrical faults with supervision as needed. Begin structured shadowing/knowledge transfer with the senior technician; start capturing notes, photos/labels (as allowed), and draft basic troubleshooting checklists. Consistently document work in the CMMS with clear problem/cause/correction details. By 180 Days Independently troubleshoot and repair the most common downtime events on Remex coilers and Spuhl equipment, including safe recovery and restart support. Demonstrate repeatable troubleshooting process (verify, isolate, repair, validate) and elevate effectively when controls/program changes are required. Complete PM work to standard and recommend improvements based on observed failures, workmanship findings, and recurring downtime trends. Contribute to reliability improvements (labeling, wiring corrections, panel cleanup, standardization, and approved small upgrades) that reduce repeat failures. Produce at least one usable troubleshooting guide or recovery procedure for a critical asset and review it with the senior technician/team. By 365 Days Serve as a primary responder for electrical/control downtime in the area; lead troubleshooting on complex faults and coordinate with controls/engineering as needed. Demonstrate deep working knowledge of Remex/Spuhl failure modes and recovery methods; maintain and improve equipment‑specific documentation. Drive at least one measurable reliability improvement (e.g., elimination of a repeat failure mode, PM optimization, improved troubleshooting standard work, or spare‑part standardization). Effectively support legacy‑to‑new technology transition work by partnering during commissioning, identifying integration risks, and helping develop sustainable maintenance standards for new equipment. Support team development by sharing learnings, coaching safe work practices, and assisting with training as appropriate. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. Work around machinery, heights, and tight spaces as needed. Use proper PPE including safety glasses, gloves, and arc‑rated clothing where required.
