Refrigeration Mechanic

Smithfield Foods, Inc. is hiring a Refrigeration/Boiler Technician to assist maintenance personnel on shift. The role involves operating, inspecting, and repairing refrigeration and boiler equipment while ensuring food safety, mechanical system integrity, and compliance with safety protocols. Key Responsibilities Attain or demonstrate RETA certification. Demonstrate strong safety leadership and follow safe work practices. Plan and conduct equipment repairs as part of the maintenance team. Conduct routine audits and equipment inspections. Demonstrate troubleshooting abilities. Maintain open and professional communication with operations. Respond to unplanned/emergency work requests promptly and effectively. Follow food safety and good manufacturing practices. Work independently and be highly motivated. Qualifications High school diploma or GED and 1+ year related experience/training in industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 4 years of direct experience. Industrial maintenance knowledge in at least three of the following areas: RETA certification; ammonia refrigeration; engine & boiler systems; electricity/motor controls; controls & instrumentation; PLC/software & hardware; pneumatics & hydraulics; mechanical systems; predictive/predictive maintenance; maintenance planning; site utilities; system analysis & troubleshooting; pipefitting & welding; machining; metal fabrication. Basic computer skills and ability to work independently. Preference for candidates with a certification or degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance and/or related college or technical coursework. Full-time hourly position; willing to work all shifts (days, evenings, nights), extended hours, weekend. Work Environment & Physical Demands The plant environment includes wet or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat, exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise level typically moderate, may be loud. Employees may lift and move up to 75 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds using buddy system or lifting devices. Work requires frequent standing, walking, use of hands, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and ability to talk or hear. Visual requirements include close and distance vision.
