JOB SUMMARY  

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic will perform repair work and maintenance on trucks, heavy equipment, and other motor vehicles and equipment within the company's fleet. This position is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensuring vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe and proper working conditions.

The Motor Vehicle Mechanic will also maintain the yard and grounds where vehicles and equipment are parked and moved.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES  

• Maintains vehicles and equipment, which may include the company's fleet of trucks, heavy equipment, tractor-trailers, and other motor vehicles.
• Performs routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes, tune-ups, inspections, and other scheduled maintenance.
• Performs tests on specific parts and systems to ensure proper function and performance.
• Identifies mechanical problems visually and/or through the use of computer diagnostic equipment.
• Diagnoses and troubleshoots diesel and gasoline engines and related systems.
• Diagnoses, repairs, and maintains hydraulic systems.
• Performs electrical and electronic troubleshooting and uses electrical schematics to diagnose and repair equipment.
• Examines critical parts and systems using standard checklists and manufacturer guidelines.
• Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems, including brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical components.
• Performs welding and metal fabrication as needed to repair or maintain vehicles and equipment.
• Plans and establishes a timetable to complete repairs and maintenance.
• May visit job sites to inspect vehicles and equipment.
• Test drives vehicles and operates equipment as necessary to confirm safe and proper operation.
• Maintains the yard where vehicles and equipment are parked and moved.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES NEEDED  

• Extensive knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
• Excellent mechanical repair and troubleshooting skills.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of electronics and the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
• Experience with diesel and gasoline engine diagnostics and troubleshooting.
• Experience with welding and metal fabrication.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to think creatively and use "out-of-the-box" thinking to identify effective solutions.
• Ability to read and understand service and repair manuals.
• Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software preferred.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and require minimal supervision.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED  

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Vocational/technical school program or apprenticeship in auto repair, diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred.
• 3–5 years of motor vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair experience required.
• Valid State of Georgia driver's license with a good driving record required.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred and may be required.

WORK REQUIREMENTS  

WORK SCHEDULE:
This is a full-time position. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. However, hours may run longer when necessary to complete a project. Weekend work may also be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, taste, and smell.

The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 lbs. Anything weighing more than 50 lbs. requires a two-person lift and should not be attempted alone.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TRAVEL:  Local travel to various work or jobsites is required.
