Nurse Residency Program Fall 2026

Job Summary The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Nurse Residency Program is a 12‑month training initiative designed for new graduate nurses, or registered nurses with less than six months of experience. Candidates must have graduated from an accredited nursing program, passed the NCLEX, hold a valid BLS certification, and be able to work 36‑40 hours per week during the first year. A background check is required prior to employment. Responsibilities Collaborate in establishing the plan of care, coordinate and implement care delivery while anticipating patient care needs across the continuum. Analyze comprehensive information pertinent to the patient’s care and management to determine nursing diagnoses. Continuously utilize the nursing process to evaluate patient progress toward goals and apply appropriate interventions to ensure effective outcomes. Employ strategies to promote health and a safe, healthy environment. Additional duties may be assigned as needed. Technical Capabilities Patient assessment & evaluation – limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience. Patient education – limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience. Care planning – establish realistic personal work goals and objectives; anticipate resource needs, identify tasks, set priorities, schedule activities, meet deadlines, organize work, and prepare status reports. Evidence‑based practice – recognize nursing is research‑based and demonstrate curiosity for its scientific basis.
