Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the custodial care of county buildings.

Employees in this class perform manual labor involving a variety of building custodial and maintenance tasks using a range of tools and light equipment. Work includes cleaning floors, windows, and restrooms; replacing light bulbs and paper supplies; building security; and routine grounds maintenance.

• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments.
• Employees may be exposed to hazards such as loud noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, and human body fluids, and are therefore subject to OSHA bloodborne pathogens requirements.
• Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.

Essential Duties and Tasks:

• Cleans buildings: vacuums, mops, sweeps, and dusts furniture; cleans restrooms and fixtures; cleans windows; shampoos carpet; buffs, waxes, and strips floors.
• Stocks restrooms with paper towels, tissue, and soap.
• Cleans window blinds, windowsills, and baseboards.
• Replaces light bulbs.
• Performs a variety of maintenance tasks, such as sweeping sidewalks, parking lots, and porches; locking and unlocking buildings; setting up rooms for meetings; moving furniture; and hauling off trash.
• Defrosts and cleans refrigerators; cleans walls, coffee pots, and dishes; washes out trash containers.
• Operates carpet cleaners, floor buffers, dusters, rakes, vacuums, and other cleaning equipment.
• Operates and cleans county vehicles.
• Raises and lowers flags.
• Maintains an adequate stock of janitorial supplies.
• Maintains basic records of work activities.

Additional Job Duties:

• May supervise community service workers.
• Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of the methods and techniques used in manual labor and custodial work.
• Working knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in cleaning buildings.
• Working knowledge of standard hand tools, light equipment operation, and materials used in assigned work.
• Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned work.
• Ability to work productively without close supervision.
• Ability to respond courteously to county employees and the public.
• Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers.
• Ability to keep basic work records.
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to perform the basic physical functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and 10 pounds of force constantly.
• Must possess the visual acuity to safely operate light equipment, such as vacuums and small trucks.

• Ability to read and write, and any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above.

Special Requirements:

• May require possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
