Information Systems Specialist II

The salary range listed on the posting depicts the maximum amount we are able to pay for this position upon entry into the position. Under general supervision, to assist with development of County computer information systems and networks; to provide a variety of user support; to maintain database systems; to assist with integration of database systems with other information systems; to facilitate and assist with the development of computer networks within the County and other entities; to provide support and training for other personnel on the use of computer networks, and information systems; and to do related work as required. (The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.) Performs a variety of work in the development and maintenance of computer information systems and networks; develops systems and applications to enhance the accomplishment of County and department functions and services; may modify existing programs to facilitate system operations and efficiency; installs and formats packaged software for stand‑alone personal computers and/or networks; may diagnose equipment malfunctions, repairing and maintaining data processing equipment, or contacting appropriate vendors to resolve problems; provides technical advice on computer information system uses and applications to County and Department management and staff; trains others in the use of data processing equipment and systems; receives, prioritizes, and responds to user requests for assistance, problem‑solving, and services; assists with facilitating the development of computer networks; works with the Director of Information Services in the development and utilization of computer services; represents the County’s Information Services unit with other County departments, vendors, and government agencies. Knowledge of Electronic data processing theory, principles, and practices and their application to computer information system development and maintenance. Development and use of computer networks and communications systems. Principles and methods of programming and systems analysis. Development and utilization of database applications. Maintenance, operations, and repair of computers and associated peripheral equipment. Ability to Maintain and modify computer information systems, including networks and database applications. Train and assist users in the use of computer equipment and software. Analyze County data processing needs and assist with development of applications to meet those needs. Monitor and maintain existing systems to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of information services. Analyze software problems and facilitate corrections. Identify hardware malfunctions and facilitate repairs. Prepare a variety of reports. Gather, organize, analyze, and present a variety of information. Make mathematical calculations quickly and accurately. Effectively represent County Information Services with other staff and agencies. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Training and Experience Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Completion of sixty (60) semester or ninety (90) quarter units from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a technical field such as Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a closely related field. Two (2) years of work experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of computer‑based systems and equipment equal to an Information Systems Specialist I with Trinity County. Training and experience must have been within the last five (5) years. Special Requirements Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver’s License.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; normal manual dexterity and eye‑hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an office and centralized computer system environment; continuous contact with other staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first experienced working level in the Information Systems Specialist class series. Incumbents perform computer information system and network development and maintenance work under the general supervision of unit management. They also provide a variety of user support. This class is distinguished from Information Systems Specialist I in that Information Systems Specialist II’s perform a broader scope of work on a more independent basis. This class is distinguished from Information Systems Specialist III in that Information Systems Specialist III is the advanced experienced level with incumbents given more complex assignments working at the highest level of independence, and are expected to be more skillful in resolving network and system problems. Positions are generally allocated in this series based on the complexity of the computer information systems and networks which they develop and regularly maintain, as well as the level of incumbent skills and knowledge.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

In addition to our everyday duties, we have an added responsibility to help in a declared disaster.
