Maintenance Technician

The Maintenance Technician maintains and optimizes sorting, grinding, and washing equipment by performing advanced preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. This role independently troubleshoots complex electromechanical equipment, supports plant performance through basic PLC programming, and ensures reliable operation of automated systems in a recycling and environmental services facility.

Responsibilities

• Maintain sorting, grinding, and washing equipment, including all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, to ensure safe and reliable operation.
• Perform advanced preventive and corrective maintenance functions on production and support equipment according to established standards and schedules.
• Repair or replace parts as directed by the work order system and complete accurate field service reports within that system.
• Overhaul or replace machine components and remove and replace worn items to extend equipment life and minimize downtime.
• Independently troubleshoot and maintain complex electromechanical equipment to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
• Communicate clearly with supervisors and equipment operators to clarify issues, understand symptoms, and confirm successful repairs.
• Discuss and recommend preventive techniques with equipment users to help minimize future breakdowns and improve reliability.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance tasks, inspections, and adjustments to keep equipment operating at peak performance.
• Maintain, repair, and install facility systems such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, odor control systems, and negative pressure systems as needed.
• Install and set up new equipment, ensuring proper alignment, calibration, and integration into existing systems.
• Coordinate with equipment vendors regarding maintenance schedules, service requirements, and technical support.
• Read, troubleshoot, and program simple PLC instructions to support plant monitoring, improve performance, and meet maintenance objectives.
• Interpret schematics and technical documentation to diagnose issues and perform accurate repairs.
• Support operations staff by responding promptly to maintenance requests and helping to restore equipment to service quickly.
• Follow safety procedures and best practices while working on electrical, mechanical, and pressurized systems in an industrial environment.

Essential Skills

• Experience maintaining and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems in an industrial environment.
• Proficiency in electrical troubleshooting, including working with three-phase power systems.
• Demonstrated ability to read and interpret schematics and technical drawings.
• Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance practices and schedules for industrial equipment.
• Ability to independently troubleshoot and maintain complex electromechanical equipment.
• Skill in using tools and test equipment required for maintenance, repair, and diagnostics.
• Strong problem-solving abilities and a systematic approach to identifying root causes of equipment issues.
• Effective communication skills to interact with supervisors, equipment operators, and vendors.
• Ability to quickly learn new industrial equipment and processes to an advanced level.
• Capability and willingness to work in an industrial, wet, and dirty environment with automated equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Welding and/or fabrication skills and experience.
• PLC troubleshooting experience and familiarity with simple PLC instruction programming.
• PLC programming experience (nice to have).
• Mechanical, electrical, or trade school certificate (nice to have).
• Experience working with odor control and negative pressure systems (preferred).
• Background in maintaining or installing HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
• Interest in continuous learning and developing advanced technical skills.
• Flexibility to work a 1st shift schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., MondayFriday or TuesdaySaturday, as required.

Work Environment

This role is based in an industrial facility focused on recycling and environmental services, featuring fully automated systems and new equipment. The environment is wet and dirty at times, and you will work around sorting, grinding, and washing machinery as well as facility systems such as HVAC, plumbing, odor control, and negative pressure systems. You will use a variety of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic instruments, and equipment related to electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance. The standard schedule is a 1st shift from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the workweek set as either MondayFriday or TuesdaySaturday, depending on operational needs. Safety procedures and protective equipment are integral to daily operations, and the facility emphasizes structured maintenance practices and adherence to established standards.

This is a Permanent position based out of Indianapolis, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $76960.00 - $79040.00/yr.
