Job Information Position: Physical Therapist – Extended School Year (ESY) Job ID: 12685 Location: Summer School / TBD Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 4 days a week, 7.5 hours per day, approximately 180 days per year. Position Summary Physical therapists in an educational setting provide specially designed instruction and related services. The physical therapist collaborates with families and educational team members to develop appropriate education programs, advise on health-related concerns as they impact education for students with special needs, and support the program goal of helping students function independently within the least restrictive environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Evaluate student physical, motor, and mobility skills and the classroom environment to identify performance deficits that interfere with development, learning, and access to education. Utilize standardized motor assessments, functional assessments, clinical observations, histories, and interviews. Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehensive written report that reflects strengths, barriers, and identifies the need for physical therapy services. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings, and develop recommendations. Develop and implement physical therapy intervention plans, including direct service, collaboration with classroom staff, and consultation/problem solving. Coordinate services with the IEP team, including parents. Identify, adapt, and modify equipment to meet student needs. Supervise licensed physical therapy assistants in service implementation. Conduct in-service training for classroom teachers and paraprofessionals to embed intervention techniques and support generalization of student skills. Other Responsibilities Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and support student learning objectives. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Possess a degree in Physical Therapy. Current Washington State Physical Therapy license. Additional Requirements Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis. Preferred Qualifications Excellent communication skills and effective problem-solving ability. Condition of Employment Criminal background clearance. Obtain Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certification within first year of employment. Willingness to learn job-related computer skills. Physical Demands The employee is constantly required to bend neck and back, use hands for repetitive grasping and pushing/pulling, stand, walk, squat, fine-manipulate, sit, kneel, reach overhead, crawl, climb stairs, and lift or carry up to ten pounds constantly, up to twenty pounds frequently, and up to fifty-seven pounds occasionally. The employee must push or pull a maximum force of thirty pounds. Exceeding weight limits should be performed as a two‑person lift or with a mechanical lift. Work Environment The employee regularly works in indoor conditions near video displays. The noise level is usually moderate. Appropriate personal protection equipment will be supplied and must be worn. Work Schedule This position typically works 180 days per year and most often 7.5 hours per day. The 2025-26 ESY schedule is: 4 hours/day in the morning, 4 days a week (Monday–Thursday) from June 29, 2026 to July 23, 2026, with an additional hour a day (30 minutes before students arrive, 30 minutes after students leave). Three days of training and preparation are scheduled for June 24, 25, and 26. Reporting Relationship The position reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Student Support Services.
