ABOUT THE POSITION Supervising Research Attorneys provide administrative and technical supervision to a designated group of Research Attorneys and Law Clerks to ensure that the judges to whom the attorneys are assigned receive timely and competent legal research support for their law and motion calendars. Los Angeles Superior Court Supervising Research Attorneys are prohibited by Court policy from practicing law during their employment. This includes prohibition from receiving fees and appearing in any court on behalf of another person, except if performing non-representational pro bono work that conforms to the Court's Pro Bono Policy and is pre-approved by management. Key Responsibilities Supervise and Evaluate Staff Performance - Oversee the daily work and performance of assigned Research Attorneys and Law Clerks, providing regular feedback, coaching, and corrective action as needed to ensure consistent and competent performance. Provide Legal Guidance and Conduct Research - Interpret and apply legal principles across various areas of law; conduct in-depth legal research; draft memoranda, tentative rulings, and legal correspondence in support of judicial officers and Court management as needed. Coordinate Training and Professional Development - Plan, deliver, and monitor training programs to ensure unit members meet mandated education requirements and develop the skills necessary for effective job performance. Develop and Implement Policies and Procedures - Analyze legislation, recommend changes to court operations, and assist in developing procedures that ensure compliance with legal and administrative requirements. Manage Workflow and Staffing Assignments - Coordinate coverage and assign work across multiple courtrooms; collaborate with judges and other supervising attorneys to ensure efficient case handling and operational continuity. THIS IS A TELEWORK ELIGIBLE OPPORTUNITY This position may be eligible for full or partial telework following an initial training period and contingent upon the needs of the Court. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS To qualify, you must meet all the following requirements at the time of application: Graduation from an accredited school of law with a Juris Doctor degree* -AND- an active member in good standing of the State Bar of California -AND- at least three years of practice as a licensed member of the State Bar of California, one year of which must have been at the level of a Superior Court of Los Angeles County Research Attorney. *To qualify for positions that require educational credentials, you must attach the required documentation to your application. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio (e.g., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience). Overtime does not count toward additional credit.
