Job Details Job Location: Police Department - Union City, GA 30291 Position Type: Full Time Salary Range: $25.55 - $25.55 Hourly General Duties and Responsibilities To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the City. While performing any procedure, all associates and contract personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines. Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position. Adhere to appropriate City operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patrol Assignment: Maintain law and order and protect life and property: patrol assigned geographic area; receive and respond to dispatched calls; investigate and take appropriate action; conduct security checks of businesses, parks, public buildings, industrial areas and residences; issue citations and/or make arrests for violations of laws including traffic violations and local ordinances; prepare incident and accident reports; attend and testify in court; respond to disasters; locate defendants and serve warrants; assist with crowd control and security assignments; report hazardous conditions on public roadways and bridges; conduct surveillance; provide assistance to the public and victim aid; request assistance from other agencies; process arrested persons; render aid to other law enforcement; attend daily roll call and training; perform specialized assignments; may serve as field training officer; work with community organizations. Traffic Assignment: Maintain traffic control through observation and use of speed detection devices; conduct road closures; detain and test drivers suspected of DUI; direct traffic at scenes; prepare accident reports; conduct investigations of vehicle accidents; attend roll call and training; perform specialized assignments; assist public with traffic concerns; survey intersections for new traffic control devices; work with community organizations. Community-Oriented Policing: Maintain peace within controlled community settings; investigate incidents; collect evidence; complete incident and accident reports; serve warrants; testify in court; gather victim, defendant and witness information; present oral presentations in schools and community settings; work with at-risk populations; analyze crime trends and citizen complaints; determine appropriate response; plan and organize community involvement; participate in problem‑solving activities to reduce crime and increase safety. Receive and respond to dispatched calls; investigate and take action; conduct security checks; issue citations; prepare reports; testify in court; provide assistance and information to the public; assist victims; process arrested persons; perform other duties as assigned. Job Scope The purpose of this position is to protect the public and ensure a safe environment within the City of Union City and surrounding communities. Successful implementation of the work results in a safer atmosphere and a decrease in citizen victimization. Supervisory Controls The patrol sergeant assigns work in terms of departmental goals and objectives. Work is reviewed through reports and observation of activities. Guidelines Guidelines include federal, state and City ordinances and regulations and departmental policies and procedures governing law‑enforcement action, including court procedures. Communications / Customer Contact Contacts are typically with other law‑enforcement officers, emergency personnel, citizens, victims, witnesses, defendants, judges, attorneys and other city employees. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications High‑school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred. Valid Georgia Driver’s license. US citizen; at least 21 years of age. Meets POST requirements for Peace Officer Certification and/or academy admission pursuant to GA law. Successful completion of the pre‑employment process, including written exam, oral interview, background check, criminal records and traffic history check, medical and drug screening, polygraph evaluation, and Police Academy. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of law‑enforcement concepts, criminal investigation, first‑aid principles, report preparation, and human behavior theories. Knowledge of laws and court decisions pertaining to law‑enforcement, search and seizure, suspects and prisoner’s rights, and evidence custody. Knowledge of use and effects of law‑enforcement weapons and methods of self‑defense and physical restraint. Knowledge of Union City Police Department policies and procedures, geographic layout, and technical terminology. Skill in learning, interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and regulations. Skill in performing accurate mathematical calculations; comprehending and retaining factual information. Skill in observing, remembering details, and preparing clear, accurate reports. Skill in communicating effectively in both verbal and written form, exercising tact and judgment. Skill in exercising independent judgment in emergency or stressful situations. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies; operate the computer and software; understand and follow instructions; gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts.
