Section 504 Counselor Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools – Charlotte, North Carolina Job ID: 5813629 Application Deadline: Aug 18, 2026 4:59 AM (UTC) Posted: Jul 02, 2026 12:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description The Section 504 Counselor, under general supervision, performs intermediate-level work with limited decision-making discretion, providing coordination and case management for Section 504 services. The position facilitates identification, eligibility determination, and plan development processes for students requiring accommodations under Section 504. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the director of student wellness, the Section 504 program manager and assigned school principal(s). Essential Functions Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures Coordinate Section 504 case processes by scheduling and facilitating eligibility, review, and reevaluation meetings; ensure required participants are present and document decisions in accordance with federal law and district procedures Maintain Section 504 records and data by entering, updating, and verifying student information in district electronic systems to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established timelines and audit requirements Review student data, collaborate with school staff, and identify students who may qualify for Section 504 services based on academic, behavioral, or medical needs Analyze student and program data to identify at-risk students, monitor trends across assigned school(s), and support data-driven decision-making related to interventions and services Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of Section 504 plans by reviewing accommodation use, collecting feedback from teachers and staff, and recommending revisions based on student performance and needs Consult and collaborate with school personnel to ensure consistent implementation of accommodations and compliance with Section 504 requirements; provide training and professional development to school staff on Section 504 regulations, processes, documentation requirements, and effective use of accommodations and supports Serve as the school-based resource for Section 504 by responding to inquiries from staff and families, interpreting policies and procedures, and providing guidance on complex cases Conduct suicide risk assessments and support crisis response efforts as needed, following district protocols and documenting actions taken Document all services and case activities in the district’s electronic system, including meeting notes, communications, and plan monitoring activities Participate in district-level trainings and meetings to maintain current knowledge of regulatory changes, program updates, and best practices Evaluate and adjust practices by reviewing outcomes, identifying process improvements, and implementing changes to enhance service delivery and compliance Perform related work as assigned or required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of Section 504 Comprehensive knowledge of how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for students Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning Skilled in communication, both verbal and written Skilled in computers and software including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to instructional practice and business needs Ability to communicate effectively Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediums Ability to problem‑solve utilizing sound judgment Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgement Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline‑driven, rapidly changing team environment Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree required Minimum of three years’ experience in area of licensure preferred Prior experience as Section 504 coordinator/case manager preferred Equivalent combination of education and experience Special Requirements Valid, or ability to obtain, NC schooling counseling, school social work, school psychology, or special education certification required Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license or ability to provide own transportation Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings Salary/Status Certified Schedule / Full‑time, 10 months Reports To Director of Student Wellness and Section 504 Program Manager; School-Based Supervision by Principal Place of Work The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Schools.
