Nurse Practitioner II, Trauma (Day Shift)

To learn more about UC Irvine, visit Your Role on the Team The position of Nurse Practitioner II in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team‑oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care for the various divisions of the department of surgery, including Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Service. Duties include and are not limited to assessing health needs, planning and evaluating care of all patients on the general surgery services as well as patients in the surgical intensive care unit. The nurse practitioner will participate with inpatient sign‑out at the beginning and end of shift, follow up with the General Surgery teams, residents and attending physicians, and be involved in trauma resuscitations and performing surgical consultations on potential general surgery patients. Responsibilities also encompass the care and organization of procedures (including scheduling operations, interventional procedures, etc.) and follow‑up, obtaining consults as needed, and discharging patients, including discharge summary, instructions and medications when appropriate. Triage phone calls, review of critical labs, follow‑up of results with patients and medical staff, obtaining comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations/assessments, and exploring patients’ interpretation of health needs are additional tasks. The NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. Under the joint supervision of the Chief of Trauma, Burns, and Critical Care Services and the Trauma Medical Director and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Nurse Practitioner will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi‑disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. Functions You May Perform Functions as appropriate to your scope of practice. In general, the scope of practice includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per approved standardized procedure. Familiarity with state statutes for your license is necessary. Required Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System. Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers. Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job. Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload. Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties. Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license. Current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license. Current, active, unrestricted furnishing license and DEA registration. Active National Provider Identifier (NPI). NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification. Within six months of hire, ATLS certification. One or more years of experience to support setting and patient population. Preferred Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook). Familiarity with UC policies and procedures. Bilingual in Spanish and/or Vietnamese. Experience in Trauma/Critical Care.
