Environmental Health Specialist I/II, DOQ (Depending on Qualifications)

Overview The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment (LCDHE) is hiring a full‑time Environmental Health Specialist to join our team. This position will conduct health inspections and investigations of public and private establishments—primarily food service, schools, child‑care facilities, and recreational waters (pools)—to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety regulations. The role requires a detail‑oriented individual who enjoys interacting with people. Responsibilities What you'll be doing: Conduct onsite inspections of regulated facilities and prepare reports related to the sanitary condition of food and beverage establishments, child‑care facilities, K‑12 school facilities, and recreational water facilities (pools). Recommend corrections and issue compliance orders to address deficiencies and violations in regulated facilities. Provide general and technical information and advice to the public to answer questions and solve problems. May conduct technical reviews of blueprints, floor plans, and facility plans for compliance with applicable regulations. Assist in coordinating environmental health activities with federal, state, and local governmental agencies. May participate in various committees and boards related to program activities and responsibilities. May provide supervision of volunteers, students, and temporary staff. What We're Looking For General understanding of environmental health principles and practices and the ability to interpret public health needs. Demonstrated working knowledge and scope of the application of laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and technical aspects of operations in the assigned programs. Good time‑management skills; ability to multi‑task and complete work in a timely manner in a lively work environment. Clear and concise communication, both verbally and in writing. Ability to identify, analyze, and secure corrections of out‑of‑compliance situations in accordance with Department policies. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community. All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process. Environmental Health Specialist I Bachelor's Degree with 30 hours coursework in basic and natural sciences (life sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, or health sciences). Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire. Environmental Health Specialist II Two (2) years as an Environmental Health Specialist I with Larimer County, or comparable experience. Bachelor's Degree with 30 hours coursework in basic and natural sciences (life sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, or health sciences). During the initial six‑month probationary period, the individual hired may telework up to one day per week if business needs allow. After successfully completing the probationary period, the individual may telework up to two days per week, depending on business plans and operational needs. Vaccine Requirement The Department of Health and Environment has a vaccine requirement. Successful candidates will be required to comply with the vaccine requirements or request a waiver.
