Forklift Operator
Aerotek
Forklift Operator
This role combines production line operation with skilled forklift work at an outdoor production and shipping yard for bagged salt products. You set up and run bagging equipment, move and stack pallets with a sit-down propane forklift, handle materials in an outdoor environment year-round, and keep accurate production records throughout your shift. The position offers a steady first-shift schedule with opportunities for overtime, especially during the busy winter season.
Responsibilities
- Set up machines on the production line by selecting the appropriate pre-loaded program and starting the equipment.
- Operate the bagging machine to fill and seal bags of product according to production standards.
- Stack pallets of bagged salt safely and efficiently using a sit-down propane forklift.
- Load and unload flatbed trucks with product using a forklift, following safe loading patterns and procedures.
- Bag product manually as needed to support production output and quality requirements.
- Shovel salt outside to clean up spills and maintain safe walking and driving areas.
- Clean the work area daily to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient production environment.
- Complete production paperwork accurately during the shift and at the end of the day.
- Keep precise records of production data, including quantities, timing, and any issues encountered.
- Work a mix of production and forklift duties throughout the day rather than operating the forklift continuously.
- Support Friday clean-up and catch-up activities, or full production work if weekly output is behind.
- Volunteer for and perform overtime work on Saturdays when needed, particularly during the busy winter season.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of experience operating a sit-down propane forklift.
- Proficiency in loading and unloading trailers with a forklift in outdoor and rough environments such as lumber yards, junk yards, or construction yards.
- Manufacturing or production experience in an environment where production metrics and output targets are used.
- Ability to work outside in the elements year-round, including heat, sun, rain, snow, and sleet for the full duration of the shift.
- Ability to consistently lift up to 50 pounds, including handling bags of salt on and off the bagging machine throughout the shift.
- Reliable use of steel-toed boots or shoes as required safety footwear.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Forklift certification.
- Experience operating heavy equipment.
- Experience loading flatbed trucks, starting in the middle and working toward the sides to fully and safely fill the truck.
Why Work Here?
The organization offers a clear pathway from contract to direct employment, including a pay increase upon conversion, employer-supported health benefits, and participation in a monthly bonus program. Team members benefit from a 401(k) plan with a company match, as well as holiday, vacation, and sick pay after an introductory period. The culture values reliability, safety, and hard work, and rewards commitment with stable hours, overtime opportunities during peak season, and long-term growth potential.
Work Environment
The work takes place above ground at a production site and shipping yard for a rock salt operation, not inside the mine. The environment is primarily outdoors and subject to all weather conditions, including heat, cold, sun, rain, snow, and sleet. The role follows a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a 45-minute lunch break that is staggered and may vary day to day. Fridays often focus on clean-up and catch-up work unless production needs require a full production day, and overtime on Saturdays is available and expected during the busy winter season. Dress code includes jeans or shorts, a T-shirt without offensive language or logos, and steel-toed boots or shoes. A uniform is provided after conversion to direct employment.
