4-H Camp Overlook Health Manager/Camp Nurse - Mountain View, NY

This position will serve as the Camp Health Manager/Camp Nurse for 4-H Camp Overlook, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Franklin and St. Lawrence County, located in Owls Head, New York. The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to: overseeing the health and safety of campers and staff at 4-H Camp Overlook, ensuring all health care practices are in line with New York State Department of Health and American Camp Association standards and guidelines, and working cooperatively with the Camp Director and Camp Staff to ensure adequate physical health conditions for all staff and camp participants. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Overlook Director. (NOTE: This position does not include cabin responsibilities but could include supervising campers or staff overnight in the infirmary.) Position Details Full‑time exempt, Sunday through Friday. Rate $600 to $800 per week commensurate with experience. Required Qualifications NYS Licensed Physician, NYS Licensed Nurse Practitioner (NP), NYS Licensed Physician Assistant (PA), NYS Licensed Registered Nurse (RN), NYS Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification. Experience in first aid and emergency management. Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care. Desire, ability and willingness to work and live in a camp community and to reside at 4‑H Camp Overlook, Owls Head, NY (including overnights) the entire time 4‑H Camp is in session. Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications Responding to Emergencies (RTE) First Aid Training (will train if necessary). Demonstrated ability and experience working with children and young adults in an outdoor/recreational environment. Demonstrated ability to update and monitor health care, maintain records, and implement a health care plan. Demonstrated ability to communicate with parents and staff about camper health concerns. Demonstrated ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders and parent letters. Position Responsibilities Job Duties - 95% Provide health care to meet individual needs of campers and staff. Follow healthcare policies/procedures outlined in the 4‑H Camp Overlook Department of Health Safety Manual. Monitor the health of all campers and staff. Develop a schedule for medication administration and administer medications to campers and staff. Establish and follow appropriate medical routines, including record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of campers and staff. Set up the camp infirmary/health center. Inventory and put requests in for all necessary medical supplies and equipment. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to New York State Department of Health standards. Ensure staff and camper health forms are current and on file. Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications. Prepare and record accident/incident reports. Oversee first aid procedures and supplies. Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp, including to counselors, on the waterfront and other activity areas, and in the dining hall/kitchen areas. Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed. Ensure a staff orientation session is delivered on medical services. Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid. Ensure orientation is provided that includes infirmary hours, specific camper health and social needs, infirmary procedures, emergency procedures, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention and risk management, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting. Screen all campers and staff who are arriving and departing camp. Verify health history, physical examination, immunization records, doctor’s orders and emergency medical authorizations are on file. Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases. Conduct a health assessment of campers and staff. Keep all medications used by campers and staff under lock and key in the infirmary. Supervise sanitation conditions throughout camp. Observe daily cleanliness in facilities throughout camp. Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director. Assist in the overall evaluation of the summer camp season, suggesting modifications that would create more healthful conditions at 4‑H Camp Overlook. Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Camp Director. Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5% Participate in required trainings provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Overlook County. In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities. Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned. Health and Safety Support the association to maintain a safe working environment. Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard. Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
