About the Department The Clinical, Medical and Regulatory (CMR) department at Novo Nordisk is one of the most diverse and collaborative groups within the organization. Position
The role provides field coaching, mentorship and management to field‑based Medical Liaisons (MLs) and develops and implements strategies aligned to identified territory archetypes. Key responsibilities include:
- Optimally managing key opinion leaders, organized providers, academic institutions and integrated delivery networks to ensure the provision of timely and up‑to‑date scientific information aligned to the NNI patient value framework.
- Ensuring the personal development of the team and facilitating collaboration between the field‑based ML team and other NNI units/personnel.
- Prioritizing customer engagement by territory archetype and leading project and team responsibilities for FMA; contributing to the representation of FMA throughout the U.S. affiliate and globally if needed.
- Providing administrative and management support for the field‑based FMA Program, establishing operating policies, developing budgets and performance standards, and assessing results from a long‑term perspective.
Relationships
- Reports to the Executive Director or Vice President, Medical Affairs.
- Direct supervisory responsibility for field‑based Medical Liaisons in designated U.S. areas.
- Collaborates closely with home‑office Medical, Marketing, Sales, Legal, Human Resources and other field personnel.
- Works with Medical Liaisons and their contacts with relevant prioritized customers within academic institutions, integrated delivery networks, managed care organizations and HMOs.
- Leads briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives.
Essential Functions
- Advocacy & Professional Relationship Development
- Leads and participates in special area and national projects, including team meetings and training.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of NNI, its products, current research and affiliated publications.
- Coordinated FMA activities at medical and scientific meetings and symposia; presents at assigned symposia to share industry issues and new data.
- Develops and maintains relationships with key health‑care providers and supports representatives in answering physician questions.
- Coordination, Communication and Administration
- Participates in Marketing and Sales meetings, providing industry insight.
- Profiles and identifies key investigators for clinical trials and future research.
- Responds to on‑ and off‑label questions in compliance with legal, regulatory and company guidelines.
- Reviews and audits expense reports; manages time and activities tracked in OSS.
- Provides timely responses to ML requests for support in research, teaching, CME activities, technical services, and consulting activities.
- Collaborates with regional and MM teams to develop new relationships with thought leaders.
- Cross‑Functional Support
- Assists in planning and delivering presentations for Pre‑POA, POA and other company meetings.
- Works with sales training to provide education using approved resources.
- Communicates NNI policies, procedures and organizational changes to reporting personnel.
- Coordinates with other Field Directors to ensure consistency of training and development.
- Management
- Acts decisively in cases of potential policy violation.
- Assists in recruitment, selection, and career development of staff.
- Sets and reviews annual goals; coaches IDPs for MLs.
- Provides constructive feedback and coaching documented in iCoach.
- Mentors new Field Directors, MLs and RMSs on technical and leadership responsibilities.
- Reviews agendas and decks; builds talents in knowledge of science and communication.
- Creates a fair, rewarding work environment and mentors for performance.
- Performs workforce assessments to identify talent gaps and plans for resource needs.
- Strategic Planning
- Facilitates feedback from MLs to improve Medical, Marketing and Sales strategies.
- Works with Executive Director to define therapeutic area concepts that influence field activity.
- Implements tactics for timely acceptance of these concepts.
Physical Requirements
50–75% overnight travel required. Position is field‑based; ideal candidate will reside in New Jersey. Driver must maintain a valid license and meet Novo Nordisk’s motor‑vehicle review standards.
Development of People
Supervises reporting personnel, ensuring they have individual development plans (IDPs), annual goals, and consistent evaluation. Manages communication of Novo Nordisk policies, procedures and the Novo Nordisk Way.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in ML or equivalent role.
- Minimum 6 years of previous management experience, including at least 2 years leading field medical affairs personnel.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive pharmaceutical industry experience, with at least 3 years in a healthcare system preferred.
- Advanced health‑care or science degree (e.g., DO, MD, PharmD, PhD, DNP) required.
- Direct experience in therapeutic area (e.g., hematology, diabetes, endocrinology) preferred.
- Proven track record of establishing relationships with opinion leaders, organized providers, and strategic cross‑functional leadership.
- Ability to establish and strengthen relationships with internal and external customers, enhancing Novo Nordisk’s image and operations.
- Requires minimal supervision, proactive problem solving, and leadership by example.
- Self‑development oriented: stays current with scientific literature, competition and industry trends.
- Take‑charge attitude, autonomy and creativity in operations at area and national level.
- Flexibility and foresight to navigate field medical personnel through a rapidly changing market space.
- Leadership skills to mentor less experienced field directors.
Compensation & Benefits
Base compensation range: $250,000–$320,000, determined by factors including experience and performance. Eligible for company bonus, long‑term incentive compensation and/or company vehicles depending on level and other factors. Employees may participate in benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k), flexible spending accounts, tuition reimbursement, and voluntary benefits such as group legal, critical illness, identity theft protection, pet insurance, auto/home insurance. Time off includes sick time, flexible vacation and parental leave policies.
