PHLEBOTOMIST – Laboratory Technician Overview The Phlebotomist performs basic laboratory tasks, obtains specimens from patients or donors, prepares samples for testing and transport, reports results, and maintains all required certifications while upholding laboratory, corporate, regulatory, and accrediting agency standards. Reports to the Laboratory Administrative Director or designee and does not supervise anyone. Has direct contact with patients and other hospital personnel. Responsibilities Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, finger stick, heel stick, and bleeding time) according to established procedures. Identifies patients, properly labels specimen tubes, and determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens for testing. Uses computers for assigned functions. Helps co‑workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments to ensure orderly workflow. Under supervision helps train new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties. Follows all organizational, departmental, and unit policies and procedures. Attends required Safety Training programs and knows responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job hazards. Follows the Hospital Exposure Control Plans for blood‑borne and airborne pathogens. Demonstrates respect for the dignity of patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to maintain a professional, courteous environment. Promotes effective working relations and works efficiently as part of a team to meet department goals. Greets patients and answers phones in the outpatient lab when required. Is responsible for daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining department neatness. Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas. Organizes assigned work and completes workload accurately. Performs pre‑analytical functions of specimens (collection, labeling, transport, processing), including custody and control drug screens. Assists in maintaining supplies at stock level. Completes daily log sheets. Conducts clerical duties: answers telephones, takes messages, performs related data entry, reproduces reports, and maintains records. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Successful completion of an approved phlebotomy training program; or One year of acceptable laboratory technique experience covering at least fifty percent of the clinical duties required in the job. #J-18808-Ljbffr Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)
